Koinos 101: Mana
Do you think the internet would have taken off if you had to pay just 1 cent to visit a website? That's why we invented the Mana system which makes Koinos ...
the first and only free-to-use blockchain.
Owning the network
Itâs natural to think that holding a token like ETH, BTC, or SOL makes you an owner of those platforms, but if you were an owner, you would have a right to use those platforms forever. But you don't have that right. You only have the ârightâ to spend those tokens down as you use the network, which isnât much of a right at all.
On Koinos, the KOIN token works exactly like you think it would!
Holding KOIN gives you a perpetual right to use the network, thanks to the Mana system.
The more KOIN you hold, the more free usage, forever. Simple.
Every KOIN token contains 1 Mana. When you use the blockchain, some of your Mana is consumed, but it regenerates in 5 days and if you only use a small percentage of your Mana it can regenerate in as little as a few minutes!
Frictionless Access
Mana can also be shared with people who have no tokens at all, which is what enables Koinos to deliver that familiar free-to-use experience that we get from the internet, and without forcing developers to pay the fees, because remember there are no fees.
For the first time ever...
developers can onboard users and allow them to the use the blockchain without first making them jump through the hoops of understanding and buying a cryptocurrency which is going to weed out the vast majority of mainstream users.
Thatâs why we donât have mainstream adoption!
In short, KOIN has real utility; it gives you ownership over a certain amount of the networkâs resources, a right which you can share with others. Koinos doesnât force you to pay ever-changing fees all the time and it does all of this while preventing people from abusing the network.
Be Free
Because you never have to part with your KOIN which gives you the right to a certain amount of the networkâs resources, this frees you, and every other KOIN holder, to focus on what matters; adding utility and making Koinos an even greater force for good.

We want to give an update on one aspect of Koinos Groupâs strategy for the bull run and alt-coin season. It is important for us to have strong and accurate information on our CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko listings. One way we can improve our ranking on CMC is to accurately disclose Koinos Groupâs holdings in an effort to get verified.
In an effort to improve our ranking, Koinos Group is going to claim our remaining 12 million KOIN. We want to assure the community that we have not been selling KOIN, nor do we have any plans to sell this claimed KOIN. The only purpose of claiming is to improve our CoinMarketCap listing.
Additionally, to continue supporting users and our developer community, we will deposit 1 million KOIN into Julianâs free Mana contract pending an internal security audit of the contract.
I feel the same way. Koinos Group is a very different company, working on a very different technology, but weâre all in this together and by âweâ I mean people who are genuinely committed to making the world a more decentralized place.
Speaking of âthe social layer,â even though I was in crypto at the time, I never got to experience those early Ethereum days because I was working on the first social blockchain, Steem.
But I think the energy was the same. It wasnât clear then, as it is now, that general purpose blockchains were the future and the combination of a blockchain and social network made us feel like we were part of something special.
Those days were some of the most exciting of my life and I havenât quite experienced anything like that since.
That social layer is critical.
Illegitimi non carborundum.
SOFTWARE ENGINEERS: Ever wish there was a general purpose blockchain that was FREE-TO-USE?
Well then Koinos has made your wish come true as the worldâs first (and still only) free-to-use general purpose blockchain and it has now been live for over a year!
But Koinos is more than just free-to-use, it is an elegantly architected protocol with tons of great features that we think you will fall in love with.
Hereâs a small list:
1. WASM smart contracts with SDKs for TypeScript and C++
2. An AMQP-based microservice architecture
3. A âManaâ system that eliminates gas fees for both you and your users
4. A proof-of-burn consensus algorithm which mimics the economics of proof-of-work with the efficiency of proof-of-stake, keeping costs low and performance high.
So what do you think?

zkRollups, parachains, sharding, ghostDAG!
There are so many scaling solutions out there, each one claiming to be the best. How are we supposed to make sense of them all?! Thatâs what @andrarchy and @KoinosVandeberg talk about in this video.
Koinos wasnât designed for any specific scaling solution, it was designed to be rapidly upgraded with whatever solution proves itself in the marketplace and fits the needs of Koinos at the time.
But Koinos is also the first and only free-to-use blockchain which means it's only a matter of time before some scaling solutions are needed.
All of this means that Koinos provides a unique window through which to analyze the question of scaling and Michael, Koinos blockchain architect and the largest code contributor to THREE live chains, is uniquely qualified to provide valuable insights into this subject.

Koinos 101: $KOIN
We all know that the current financial system wasnât designed to empower us, it was designed to extract wealth from everything we do while limiting our ability to take control over our lives and our livelihoods.
But Koinos is a new, free-to-use, high performance, monetary system, financial system, and computer system all rolled into one and KOIN is the digital currency that makes it all work because holding KOIN gives you the RIGHT to use the network for free, forever. Itâs that simple.
Own Your Network
On Ethereum, Cardano, Solana, and most other blockchains, holding the token doesnât give you a right to do anything other than pay the fees they charge you to use their system.
Insiders Bad
On other blockchains you donât own anything and almost all of them gave tokens to insiders before the public. Those insiders unfairly influence and profit off your use of those systems... so they're no different than the system we already have, and are trying to change!
Bitcoin-style Mining
There are no KOIN insiders because every KOIN token had to be mined, just like Bitcoin, and holding KOIN gives you total and perpetual control over a certain amount of the networkâs resources, so you are in charge.
Utility+
Holding KOIN has real utility but thereâs even more you can do with KOIN, by BURNING it. But if KOIN is so great, why on Earth would you want to burn it? Unlike Bitcoin, which has wasteful mining that increases the costs of running the network, you can run Koinos on your existing computer because there is no mining. Instead, by sacrificing your right to use the network and lowering the supply of KOIN, you gain another right; the right to help run the network and acquire even more newly created KOIN.
Be The Insider
KOIN has no insiders, which means you are the insider, and it has real utility. You can either use the network for free or burn your tokens, creating deflationary pressure, in exchange for the right to run the network and earn a percentage of newly created KOIN tokens. All of this gives KOIN a uniquely deflationary and inflationary design that makes it more dynamic and secure.
Whole New Game
While most blockchains and cryptocurrencies play the same old games, reinventing the same problems in the current system, Koinos plays an entirely new game with a whole new âcoinâ of the realm ;).
Imagine a financial universe where you hold the power. Where every decision you make with your assets has tangible benefits not just for you, but for everyone because you're supporting the integrity and growth of a revolutionary system with no barriers to entry.
This is a new society where the balance of power is provably in your hands, and where you are more than just a user or developer, youâre a founding member. That's the promise of Koinos. More than a promise; itâs a reality, verifiable on the main net today.
So, do you want to continue being just another pawn in someone elseâs game, or do you want to take control and start calling the shots?

Koinos 101: Modular Upgradeability
Koinos can improve at a more rapid rate than any other blockchain in the world thanks to modular upgradeability which enables the chain to be agile.
Mainstream Adoption
One of the major reasons why blockchain technology has failed to go mainstream is because of how difficult they are to upgrade. Every computer system needs to evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of developers and their users otherwise it will never be able to deliver what they need in the here and now. In other words, poor upgradeability makes time your worst enemy. The longer youâre around, the worse you are sure to get.
Ethereum & Hard Forks
Ethereum is the perfect example, though most blockchains suffer from this problem because upgrades require a hard fork of the network. Hard forks are difficult and disruptive, but even worse, they force the community to bundle as many upgrades as possible in the hopes of pushing them all through a centralized political process.
Wouldnât it be great if individual upgrades could be made whenever theyâre needed by decentralized governance and without disrupting the operation of the network? Thatâs what modular upgradeability enables, and Koinos is the only chain with this degree of upgradeability because itâs the only chain built on the Koinos Blockchain Framework.
A New Blockchain Framework
The Koinos Blockchain Framework can be thought of as the worldâs simplest blockchain. It contains only the cryptographic primitives necessary to construct a blockchain plus logic which enables features written in smart contracts to be added to the blockchainâs system code.
In other words, the Koinos Blockchain Framework is a blockchain designed to have no features, so that any feature can be added in a smart contract and since Koinos smart contracts are designed to be upgraded in-band (or without a hard fork) that means system features can be upgraded without a hard fork as well.
Main net = Flagship Blockchain
Koinos main net is really the flagship blockchain of the Koinos Blockchain Framework which means all of its features are implemented as upgradeable smart contracts, including a decentralized governance system which is how upgrades get approved by token holders. The proof-of-burn consensus algorithm, the KOIN token, the Mana system, even the decentralized governance system itself can be upgraded at any time thanks to modular upgradeability.
The point isnât that hard forks will never be needed, but there will be far less reason to hard fork because they arenât needed to change the system, only to increase efficiency or fix a bug; non-contentious changes.
Virtually none of the upgrades scheduled on Ethereumâs hard fork roadmap, would require a hard fork on Koinos. Imagine how much farther along Ethereum, and the entire blockchain space, would be if each of these improvements could be added to the blockchain with zero disruption after just one month which is how long it takes to be approved by decentralized governance on Koinos.
Scaling to the Masses
If Ethereum had modular upgradeability, they might have even been able to keep some of their original plans like scaling the L1 through sharding, a plan they abandoned because it was just too hard to implement.
Thanks to modular upgradeability, we donât have to think years ahead, try to predict what the best solutions will be, and begin working on them now. We can defer commitment and wait to see what the best solutions actually are, solutions that had to be developed by blockchains without the flexibility of Koinos, and we only need to integrate them once they are tested and proven.
While hard forks make time the worst enemy of most other blockchains, modular upgradeability makes time the strongest ally of Koinos.

On Koinos someone does have to hold KOIN in order for network resources to be used, but instead of having to spend down those tokens paying fees, the tokens are automatically locked for a certain amount of time after which they are unlocked and can be used again. This allows the network to mitigate congestion and spam without fees!
