This beast killed my primary school friends, six of my neighbours and he almost killed me too.

Christmas Day, 2011.

I was at St. Theresa's Catholic Church fetching water from their borehole because December is usually dry season in the North. Harmattan, dry skin and dry wells.

Our neighbours who were Catholics were already inside the church, singing and dancing. I think Father Achi was the one in charge of the parish back then and was presiding over the service.

I was with my wheelbarrow that i used in carrying water i fetched at the back of the priest's quarters when my friends saw me. They were outside buying sweets from the Hausa vendors.

We linked up for a bit. We talked. We laughed. After some time, they told me they were going inside because it was time for them to give their offerings.

I picked up my wheelbarrow and started leaving while they ran back to the church and that was when i heard the blast.

My ears immediately went deaf.

The force of the explosion pushed me to the ground. My gallons fell over and water started leaking everywhere.

I was in a trance.

I could see the smoke.

I could see people running towards the church and some out of it.

But I couldn't hear anything.

It was completely silent.

And that was when I saw them.

My friends.

Lying on the floor close to the church entrance.

The same boys I had just been laughing with a few seconds earlier.

Kalu.

Ben.

Samson.

Tony.

That was when i stood up and ran home crying.

I was a child. I didn't understand terrorism. I didn't understand religious extremism. I didn't understand why somebody would want to blow up a church on Christmas Day.

That day changed something in me forever. This isn't something I read about in the news.

I was there.

And somehow, I survived.

People talk about terrorism in Nigeria using numbers.

How many people died.

How many were injured.

How many churches were attacked.

But behind every number are people with actual names.

People who had friends.

This is deeply shocking!

A journalist recently asked the Minister of Defence of Nigeria to explain exactly what the Nigerian Armed Forces are purchasing with a $4 billion national defense budget, and to my greatest surprise, he boldly claimed that the military is actively procuring American Tomahawk cruise missiles at a staggering cost of $3.2 million per single missile.

Now, this is quite hilarious because there is not a single, solitary shred of a Tomahawk missile anywhere in the armories of the Nigerian military. In fact, Nigeria does not even possess the naval or digital infrastructures required to launch and deploy these long-range cruise missiles.
Tomahawks are designed to be launched from specialized Vertical Launch Systems installed on multi-billion-dollar guided-missile destroyers and nuclear attack submarines, none of which the Nigerian Navy operates.

Thus, I find it difficult to understand why a Minister of Defence would even mention Tomahawk missiles, because Nigeria has zero tactical need for them. Tomahawk cruise missiles are not designed to hunt down ragtag bandits and rural kidnappers operating on cheap motorbikes in forest bushes. Tomahawk missiles are strictly reserved for deep-penetration strikes against advanced military installations, long-range radar arrays, and integrated surface-to-air missile batteries during high-intensity state-on-state warfare.

But aside from the imaginary Tomahawk missiles, the Minister also proudly mentioned that Nigeria is procuring laser-guided precision munitions and loitering missiles costing over $100,000 each for our attack aircraft and Turkish drones.
Now, understand that I am not naive, we all know that a $4 billion budget is relatively tight to sustain the sprawling territorial defense of a nation of 220 million people fighting on multiple fronts. But we must urgently ask ourselves whether our military hierarchy is genuinely serious about crushing terrorism, or if they are simply draining our scarce foreign exchange reserves to purchase fancy, overpriced military hardware from America, Turkey, and Europe strictly to secure massive procurement commissions for the corrupt elites.

The terrorists and bandits terrorizing our communities are simply not mathematically worth the expensive precision bombs we are dropping on them. Even if you drop a $100,000 laser-guided bomb directly on the head of a single bandit warlord hiding under a tree, that expensive munition is still an absolute tactical waste. This is because the underlying criminal terror network remains completely intact, a brand-new commander is appointed in a matter of a few hours, and the kidnapping and terror industry continues uninterrupted. This is precisely why breaking news reports of Nigerian troops neutralizing a high-profile Boko Haram or ISWAP commander no longer generate a single shred of excitement among everyday Nigerians. The exhausted public fully understands that localized military skirmishes will never fundamentally improve the security reality on the ground so long as the broader network is untouched.

These foot soldiers and insurgents are highly disposable assets, and the absolute priority must be to systematically map out, choke, and dismantle their entire logistical, financial, and communication networks. Instead of wasting millions of dollars buying high-end strike drones equipped with expensive laser-guided munitions that are rarely deployed and almost always wasted, why not procure hundreds of cheaper, long-endurance tactical reconnaissance drones? Equip these affordable drones with high-definition thermal imaging cameras, infrared sensors, and night-vision optics. You only need a fleet of a few units of these surveillance drones to continuously patrol the dense forests of Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, and Borno 24/7, providing uninterrupted live feeds, thermal coordinates, and real-time movement tracking of terrorist encampments straight to forward operating bases.
Furthermore, we desperately need state-wide, solar-powered streetlights equipped with high-definition CCTV cameras, night-vision lenses, and automatic license plate recognition systems along major highways, interstate transit corridors, and rural junctions to properly track terrorist movements, stop kidnappings, and feed actionable data directly to our intelligence agencies.

Hardware and weapons are important, but we must have the humility and strategic discipline to admit that our primary national security focus must be shifted entirely toward raw intelligence, surveillance networks, human tracking, and real-time data integration. We must urgently transition our military doctrine from merely managing and monetizing the insurgency to permanently checkmating, isolating, and eradicating it. Decorating our military barracks, airbases, and command centers with shiny, overpriced American and European weapons will never help us defeat the terrorists and bandits destroying our nation.
