"The technofetishistic egotism of assuming that programmers are uniquely suited to solve society's problems"
@FoldableHuman really nailed the spirit of our age
@PstafarianPrice If I, as a contractor, am tasked with building an underground doomsday bunker for some billionaire, obviously I'm adding in some measures for external sabotage, because why the hell should they survive collapse instead of me?
@whatifalthusser The assembly and fast food workers, artists, and line cooks are all out of work if their businesses don't market effectively. The politicians who decide budgets for teachers and firefighters will rise and fall by their marketing. Marketing IS society, it's the comms channel.
@whatifalthusser In no way is assembly line worker considered a real job by society but fast food worker isnt.
This just reads as a fetishization of blue collar work.
Irony is, for the presence marketing has in your "doesnt do anything" boxes, it is easily the most important economic function.
@TylerAlterman If sci-fi is technology centred rather than people focused, its BAD sci-fi.
Hard sci-fi might be grounded in a more plausible future reality - the other end of the spectrum to fantasy - but user guides for future technology are the very worst of the genre.
@AskYatharth As we're seeing kids being obviously damaged by social media, screen time as babies, and the diminishment of interpersional relationships, likening this to juul feels incredibly spot on.
Wide spread dataset poisoning can't come soon enough. Bring on the neo-Luddites!
@flinkart Oh no, tech bro losers are going to start relieving their lonely frustrations with their phones instead of making it everyone else's problem, and leave ordinary well-adjusted people alone to enjoy life without their annoying presence!
@QiaochuYuan It's on the construction workers to have enough solidarity with normal people to sabotage these billionaire's bunkers such that if they ever become necessary, their security measures can be completely overriden.
@ESYudkowsky Except in reality, the kid is the one who developed stockfish knowing full well his wellbeing/livelihood/life depended on him being able to beat it... ๐คฆ๐พโโ๏ธ
@animalologist Isn't that basically just teenagers though? Except in the past, they would use drugs to visit other dimensions instead of their imaginations? Seems like a healthy progression to me.
@wanyeburkett Right winger unironically presenting scammers avoiding punishment as the highest illustration of their ideal society has to be one of the funniest and most telling things I've seen on here.
@soychotic This is a ridiculous conversation to be having. If you're not chartered, calling yourself an engineer means literally nothing. This is like arguing about whether dr pepper is as good as an MD.
You're trying to compare completely unrelated things.
@sanjehorah "I'm a rationalist"
- someone who is without a doubt driven primarily by their emotions and biases, but arrogantly thinks their limited perspective is akin to absolute truth.
@NoContextHumans Murder. She was sat at her desk when it happened, hence the height of the blood on the wall. Which means she was shot left side of head. But she's holding the gun in her right hand, which would've sprayed blood the other direction.
@mythanthrope You literally just sound like a brit threatening the american colonies with the lack of security and protection they'll experience if they ever choose to leave the empire ๐
