My favorite prospect for the Charlotte Hornets at Point Guard has gotta be Brandon Williams. I really don’t understand why he hasn’t gotten more interest in free agency, even a two-way!

Mike Conley Jr. and Ousmane Dieng were also routed in the trade.

That 2029 2nd rounder came from OKC along with Dieng for Mason Plumlee. Almost immediately, the Hornets re-routed Dieng alongside Collin Sexton and three second-round picks to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for guards Coby White and Mike Conley Jr. Conley Jr. was waived shortly after, where he joined the TWolves again.

All that to say they were non-factors in the trade 😂

This is interesting, I’ve done some extensive research into Coby White’s tenure with the Bulls, their reasons to run with Giddey over White at starting PG, and of course, the Coby White trade itself.

Giddey has to be the weirdest archetype of guard in the current NBA. He’s not fast, not explosive, not a deep threat, and not primarily a scoring guard the current NBA model seems to cater to. He’s huge at 6’8, and facilitates by giving the best looks to any shooter around him. He is also a fantastic rebounder.

Then Coby, your current NBA scoring guard archetype. Shot creator, three-point threat, and a guy that bends defenses just by being on the floor. He facilitates in a completely different way. Defenses have to respect him, which naturally opens things up for everybody else.

It’s almost like the Bulls had to pick between two completely different ways to create offense. One does it with shot creation. The other does it with size, vision, and making the right read over and over again.

Its hard to even call it a “better player” debate as much as a philosophy debate. Chicago basically chose one of the least conventional lead guards in the NBA over one of the most conventional.

The Hornets then acquired Coby White.

2029 first-round pick (top-8 protected)
Two second-round picks

Chicago added draft capital while clearing the runway for Josh Giddey to become their full-time lead guard. Charlotte, meanwhile, adding another shot creator and floor spacer.

Coby played 21 regular season games and 2 play-in games with the Charlotte Hornets before he was offered a 3yr, $74m Guaranteed contract and a the team traded LaMelo Ball and made Coby the starting PG.

The picks were
2031 2nd round (best of CLT or NYK)
2031 2nd round (best of CLT or Denver)

There was also a 2029 2nd round pick that was later returned to the Hornets because of Coby's undisclosed injury.

@AllAboutHornets I honestly agree 100%. I just worry if Coby goes out (hope to God he doesnt) then I want someone i can rely on to carry the team, like Coby was to LaMelo last year. Westbrook, I feel, would do that better.
