A road can connect more than places. It can open access to jobs, markets and essential services.
In southeastern Tajikistan, the completed Kulyab–Kalaikhumb Road Project is helping provide safer, more reliable year-round movement of people and goods between western Tajikistan and the eastern region of Gorno-Badakhshan.
Our President Dr. Abdulhamid Alkhalifa visited the OPEC Fund-financed project to see its impact firsthand.
With a US$10 million loan from the OPEC Fund, the project reconstructed 58 km of road across two sections of the strategic Kulyab–Kalaikhumb corridor, including four bridges and one tunnel.
For people living in Kulyab, Shurabad and Darvaz districts, the improved connection means better access to jobs, markets and public services, while making it easier to transport local products.
The project strengthens a key transport corridor connecting western Tajikistan, including Dushanbe, with Gorno-Badakhshan and extending toward China, supporting more efficient movement of people and goods and inclusive economic growth.
With nearly 40,000 tons of fresh mangoes reaching European markets each year, Côte d’Ivoire has become a key African player in the international mango trade.
The entire value chain has benefited from the support of an innovative initiative funded by IFAD, the Government of Côte d’Ivoire and @TheOPECFund helping producers strengthen their productivity and market access.
This support has translated into tangible results: 80% of project participants reported increased production, while 70% saw an improvement in their income.

A stronger road connection. Better access to essential services. New opportunities for trade and regional connectivity.
The OPEC Fund is deepening its partnership with Tajikistan with a US$30 million loan for the first phase of the Rushan–Varshez Road Rehabilitation Project. The project will strengthen a key transport corridor between central and eastern Tajikistan and improve the country’s most direct road connection with China.
Our President Dr. Abdulhamid Alkhalifa signed the loan agreement alongside the OPEC Fund’s first Country Partnership Framework with Tajikistan, together with HE Faiziddin Qahhorzoda, Minister of Finance.
The framework sets priorities for cooperation during 2026–2028, focusing on energy security, regional connectivity and food security.
“The Country Partnership Framework marks an important step in our long-standing cooperation with Tajikistan and reflects our shared commitment to sustainable growth and stronger regional connectivity. The Rushan–Varshez project demonstrates this partnership in action. By improving a vital transport link, it will provide communities with more reliable access to essential services while supporting trade and economic opportunity,” said our President.

From restoring degraded land to strengthening drought resilience, turning commitments into investment is key.
At @UNCCD COP17 in Mongolia, an OPEC Fund delegation joined global partners to advance investment and practical solutions for more resilient land and livelihoods.
The discussions build on a major commitment made at COP16 in Riyadh: up to US$1 billion from the OPEC Fund to support initiatives addressing land degradation, drought resilience and sustainable land management in partner countries.
At @Cop17Mongolia, the delegation contributed to discussions on scaling nature-positive investment and engaged with governments and development institutions on land restoration, drought resilience and sustainable infrastructure.
With up to 40 percent of the planet’s land affected by degradation, threatening more than one billion people, translating global commitments into investment and action is increasingly urgent.

Today at the world's key forum to combat desertification, #UNCCDCOP17, we launched the Financing Investments and Eradicating Land Degradation and Desertification (FIELD) Initiative with partners to attract at least $2 billion by 2035 for land restoration and drought resilience across Asia and the Pacific.
Land degradation is not only an environmental problem. It is also an investment problem. FIELD will help countries turn priorities into investable projects, using blended finance, derisking, and capital-market instruments to unlock more private capital.
I welcome the growing interest and collaboration around FIELD with @qatar_fund, @TheMGIorg, @IUCN, the European Union, @TheOPECFund, @BMZ_Bund, @giz_gmbh and @UNCCD.

Every journey begins with a first step.
When the OPEC Fund launched its first Project Lending Programme in 1977, it set out to support projects that met basic needs, reduced inequalities and strengthened countries' long-term resilience. That year, 22 project loans worth US$88.9 million were approved across 20 countries, spanning agriculture, energy and transport.
One of those first investments is featured here: a US$1.7 million agriculture loan for the Northeast Ghor Canal in Jordan, helping bring irrigation and rural development to 25,000 people in the Jordan Valley.
