I spoke at The Expedition Conference in Unilag last year, saw how coordinated and involved they were in such activities…
December 2024, I tried to host a web3 event in OOU.
1. The school didn’t approve of the event holding even after days of meeting the DEAN and DVC and getting a letter to the VC
2. The school didn’t approve of any venue within the school.
For it to happen later that week, I had to book Elite Club, an Hall outside school premises, get it decorated and all… unnecessary expenses.
did all the ads myself, at the school park and at all faculties…
600+ people attended.
many of them got their first exposure to web3 on that day!
couple of them are doing really good stuff right now!
I also hosted another event in the OOU: Sagamu Campus, a night before the day of the event, the man in charge of the campus (provost I think), came and said we couldn’t use the hall we had decorated already…
I had to find another hall around 7-8pm that night, and get decorations moved overnight.
the hall we eventually got was much smaller… many people had to stand through the event…
Close to 800+ people attended, people came from Lagos, Ekiti, Ijebu Ode, and surroundings to attend…
I know someone who got their first exposure to web3 at that event in sagamu and has made $20,000+ between January 17, 2025 and today, July 23, 2026!
the school needs to be more supportive of such initiatives…
so many people have talents, skills, and a burning desire inside of them that they need to exhibit or display.
Unilag currently gives their students a platform to display such talents, OOU doesn’t…
it can be fixed though… they should start by setting up a committee that that includes YOUNG people majorly (98%)… people who are interested in the growth of these students.
then they should start by actively supporting clubs like @oouweb3, GDG in OOU, OOU Tech Community and more….
most students don’t even know these communities exist.
build structure, educate people, give them a platform to display what they’ve got, put them out there!
There are schools already doing all of this, we just need to learn and recreate!
