The project aims to improve livestock feed supply, promote modern livestock production, reduce farmer-herder conflicts, and strengthen peaceful coexistence.

IFPRI Panel #AFSF26: Kyari Highlights Nigeria’s Shift to Market-Driven Agriculture

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, @SenatorAKyari, CON, has highlighted Nigeria’s shift from short-term agricultural interventions to a more integrated, market-driven food system focused on productivity, processing, markets and investment.

Kyari spoke at an IFPRI-organised panel at the 2026 Africa Food Systems Forum (AFSF) on “Agrifood Systems at the Crossroads: Major Disruptions and Required Policy Innovations.”

He said the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro-Pocket (NAGS-AP) had recorded 2.54 million metric tonnes of produce worth an estimated ₦2.31 trillion across four farming seasons, contributing to improved food availability and price stability.

The Minister said government was moving beyond input distribution by linking farmers to aggregation, markets and guaranteed off-take, including an initiative targeting two million smallholder farmers and the distribution of over 10 million bags of fertiliser.

He also highlighted the procurement of 2,000 modern tractors and $538 million in co-financing for the first phase of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones across seven states and the FCT.

Kyari stressed that evidence-based policymaking, backed by research, data and economic modelling, remains central to shaping Nigeria’s agricultural policies and investment decisions, with IFPRI and other partners playing a key role.

Kyari Calls for Increased Irrigation Investment to Boost Africa’s Food Security

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, has called for increased investment in irrigation to unlock Africa’s agricultural potential and strengthen food security.

Kyari made the call at an IFPRI side event, “Why Water Matters: Scaling Irrigation Investment for Africa’s Food System,” during the 2026 Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali, Rwanda.

He noted that Africa has about nine per cent of the world’s renewable freshwater resources and more than 60 per cent of its uncultivated arable land, yet only six per cent of its cultivated land is irrigated.

Kyari said expanding irrigation would support year-round farming, improve yields and reduce the impact of unpredictable rainfall.

“Africa is not water-poor; Africa is water unlocked,” he said.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s experience with the TRIMING Project and the $500 million SPIN Project as examples of efforts to strengthen irrigation and place farmers at the centre of water management.

Kyari urged African governments and development partners to move from commitments to action, stressing that water security is fundamental to food security, peace and prosperity.

Kyari Pushes Nigeria-Embrapa Partnership on Tropical Agriculture at #AFSF2026 Side Event

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, CON, has called for deeper collaboration between Nigeria and Brazil’s agricultural research institution, Embrapa, to accelerate agricultural transformation and strengthen food security across Africa.

Speaking at an Embrapa-organised side event at the 2026 Africa Food Systems Forum (#AFSF2026), Kyari highlighted Brazil’s success in transforming its tropical agriculture and said Nigeria could benefit from stronger cooperation in agricultural research, technology transfer, mechanisation and climate-resilient farming.

He stressed that Africa must develop solutions suited to its own realities rather than simply import technologies, urging deeper South-South cooperation, joint research and knowledge exchange.

“Nigeria has the land, the people and the market to become an agricultural powerhouse,” Kyari said, stressing the need to turn the country’s agricultural potential into greater productivity, jobs and food security.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to deepen its partnership with Embrapa and Brazil, saying the success of such cooperation should ultimately be measured by improved productivity and farmers’ prosperity.

The City Boy Movement continued its grassroots engagement in Gaya LGA, Kano State, bringing together members from different rural communities, young stakeholders, zonal leaders and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

The engagement focused on membership registration, data collection and strengthening the movement’s grassroots structure ahead of the work to come.

Members also reaffirmed their commitment to the movement and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

Under the leadership of Hon. Abdulazeez Abubakar Kaka, Northwest Zonal Coordinator, we remain committed to taking the movement closer to the people and building a stronger grassroots structure across the Northwest.
