Family and friends of South Carolina’s fallen first responders gathered yesterday at the Rupert Huse Veteran Center in Greenville to celebrate South Carolina's first annual Gold Shield Day.
Determined to give surviving families of fallen heroes proper recognition, the Upstate Warrior Solution approached @jelliottsc, who sponsored the legislation. South Carolina is now the first state to designate June 1 as Gold Shield Day.
“Today is an opportunity to bring folks together and honor those who gave it all for us,” Elliott said. “It has been humbling and gratifying to be a part of the process.”
For those in attendance, yesterday's ceremony was an opportunity to bond with other surviving families and ensure their loved ones' legacy will live on for years to come.
“As the saying goes, 'You die twice: once when you stop breathing, and another when somebody says your name for the last time,'" said Lois Rao, who lost her son, Senior Trooper Michael J. Rao (SCHP), in the line of duty in 2002. "That's why it's so important to keep saying the names of these heroes, because then they will never be forgotten."

The Old Vaucluse Road bridge over I-20 has officially reopened to traffic!
Crews have been working tirelessly to replace the bridge after being damaged in June 2025. Not only has the bridge been rebuilt, it’s been improved to serve this Aiken County community better than before.
Sadly, a pedestrian is killed every 74 minutes in traffic crashes. Remember, at some point in the day EVERYONE is a pedestrian:
🚶➡️ Follow the rules of the road
🚶➡️ Use crosswalks when available
🚶➡️ Walk on sidewalks when available
🚘 Look out for pedestrians and minimize blind spots
🚘 Be careful in hard-to-see conditions
🚘 Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks

We appreciate the opportunity to connect with the community and spend time with the next generation.
Today I had the opportunity to visit Kingston Elementary School and spend some time with the students and teachers during their Field Day festivities. We talked about the importance of wearing your seatbelt, making safe choices around traffic, and being responsible passengers.
Memorial Day marked the start of the 100 Deadly Days of Summer travel season, so we encourage you to enjoy the season responsibly.
The 100 Deadly Days of Summer — which runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day —is a busy travel period when we typically see traffic fatalities increase.
Summer shouldn’t be deadly, so let’s all do our part by buckling up, slowing down, and eliminating distractions. And remember — if alcohol is a part of your plans, designate a sober driver.
We'd like to give a special shout-out to Chelsie Norton, Telecommunications Operator (TCO) who was recently recognized as Employee of the Quarter for our NCIC Telecommunications Hub in Charleston!
When asked what she loves most about being a telecommunications professional, she said: "I enjoy the camaraderie and sense of accomplishment at the end of the day."
Thank you for your service for the last 12 years, Chelsie! We appreciate your dedication!
Summer is here, schools are letting out, and families from across the country are heading to Myrtle Beach and the South Carolina coast for vacation. The South Carolina Highway Patrol wants everyone to arrive safely and make memories, not headlines.

This holiday weekend, STP M/Off Deweese pulled over a CMV driver seen in this video swerving and driving erratically. The driver was impaired with a BAC of 0.19. He was arrested and his vehicle taken out of service. Thanks to Deweese this story didn’t end in tragedy.
With the start of hurricane season less than a week away, now is the time to ensure you and your family are prepared! 🌀
