I evaluate managers more at can they do their job and allow me to do mine, rather than help me do mine.

Nit: Captain is not manager imo, coach is manager and plenty of great coaches who were never players

Also being more technical != doing the job better. They often get in the way rather than help. This is why the best engineers don’t necessarily make the best managers and vice versus.

@debarghya_das That’s a personal/small data set. And I’m not dispute the climb is harder than if you do have technical chops. I’ve seen both non-technical managers be effective and technical ones not be.

Also there are plenty of examples of non tech background CEOs being tech startup founders.

But value add should be measured by solving problems (technical, interpersonal etc all count)
