Atlantic menhaden are one of the most important fish on the East Coast. They feed striped bass, bluefish, tuna, whales, ospreys, and countless other predators. They provide bait for commercial fisheries harvesting lobster and crab as well as for recreational fisheries, sustaining coastal economies from Maine to Florida.

But while New England’s stake in the menhaden fishery has grown, the system used to allocate harvest access among Atlantic states has remained largely unchanged.

That’s why the TRCP has launched a new petition and companion video calling on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) to establish a more equitable allocation of Atlantic menhaden catch quota when it considers reallocation this November.

In May 2026, TRCP announced that federal land management agencies had completed a key first step in implementing the 2022 Modernizing Access to our Public Land Act by publishing more than 30,000 records of easements and reservations that secure public rights-of-way across private land. The newly available data was released through the MAPLand ARC GIS Hub, making it easier for hunters, anglers, outdoor recreationists, land managers, and mapping companies to identify and use legal access routes to enjoy and effectively manage public lands.

This access success was years in the making.

Bipartisan Great American Outdoors Act 250 Introduced in Congress

“Investing in America’s public lands is crucial to making it easier for hunters and anglers to access our shared natural resources,” said Joel Webster, TRCP’s chief conservation officer. “As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, TRCP applauds the bipartisan introduction of the Great American Outdoors Act 250 and the continued commitment to manage and increase access to our public lands to benefit all Americans.”

TRCP's Jim Kauffman got to help firsthand with hauling in trotlines set to remove this aquatic invasive species from the Chesapeake Bay, as part of larger management efforts that require collaboration and partnerships.

It’s one thing to read about the abundance of invasive blue catfish in the Chesapeake Bay. But it’s another thing to experience it for yourself. These voracious predators have now spread throughout most of the Upper Bay and are established in every major tidal river in Maryland.

To fulfill our mission of guaranteeing all Americans quality places to hunt and fish, TRCP is taking steps to pass and implement legislation that will make it easier for the public to know the location of existing public roads, trails, and access points, and to make readily available public use rules such as vehicle, weapon, boating, and fishing restrictions on public lands and waters.

Such clarity will not only help Americans enjoy their best days outdoors, but it will also reduce frustration and confusion, help people avoid conflict with landowners and other users, and prevent inadvertent violations.

Atlantic menhaden are arguably the most important fish on the East Coast. They feed striped bass, tuna, whales, and other predators; support bait fisheries relied on by the lobster, blue crab, and recreational fishing industries; and help sustain coastal economies from Maine to Florida. But while New England's stake in the menhaden fishery has grown, the system used to allocate harvest access among states has changed little. Most harvest is still allocated to one state, where a single foreign-owned fishery reduces menhaden into fertilizer and fish feed, while fishermen in the Northeast who rely on menhaden struggle to obtain bait.

This week, 51 conservation and sportsmen’s organizations sent a letter to the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee expressing strong support for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) as the Committee prepares to consider a 2026 Farm Bill. Now in its 40th year, CRP is one of USDA’s flagship voluntary conservation programs and one of the most powerful tools available for creating and restoring the wildlife habitat that hunters and anglers depend on – while also delivering significant benefits for farmers, ranchers, wildlife, soil health, and water quality across the country.

“Habitat makes opportunity, and no USDA program creates more habitat that benefits both producers and hunters and anglers than the Conservation Reserve Program,” said Aaron Field, director of private lands conservation at the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership. “CRP has a long track record of supporting wildlife, improving water quality, and expanding access to quality hunting and fishing opportunities, while keeping working lands working. With a 2026 Farm Bill on the horizon, Congress has a clear opportunity to build on that record and ensure CRP has the resources it needs for its next 40 years.”

National Trails Day Slated for Tomorrow Saturday June 6!

Since 1993, National Trails Day has been held on the first Saturday in June to celebrate access to our public lands. This year, in partnership with the American Hiking Society, the U.S. Forest Service is starting the tradition of engaging all forest service units on National Trails Day. 350 ranger districts will be sponsoring over 1,000 miles of trails maintenance on Saturday, June 6, and TRCP encourages our members to get involved in this effort.

3 bills to improve Gulf menhaden management and limit damage caused by foreign-owned industrial menhaden fishing companies have been signed into law in Louisiana, thanks to legislative pushes by Reps. Cox, Zeringue, and Orgeron and overwhelming support from recreational fishing and conservation advocacy organizations.

The laws will add accountability by increasing fines for nearshore fishing violations, enhancing pogy boat tracking capabilities, and improving fishery oversight by publicizing menhaden harvest reports. TRCP thanks everyone involved in securing more steps toward modernizing the menhaden fishery into a more sustainable, ecosystem-based fishery.

Yesterday, @USDA released a new unified framework for migratory big game conservation - a commitment to stewarding big game migration corridors and improving habitat for elk, mule deer, and pronghorn across 17 states. By directing voluntary, incentive-based Farm Bill programs toward habitat connectivity and barrier reduction on private working lands, this framework builds directly on the success of USDA's Migratory Big Game Initiative - an approach that has already proven itself in Wyoming and beyond.

"We thank USDA for recognizing that big game migrations require both public land management and private landowner support and for committing resources to incentivize the conservation work these herds depend on,” said Aaron Field, TRCP’s director of private lands conservation. “This Framework is a sign that conserving America's iconic migrations has real momentum, and we look forward to continuing to work with USDA, lawmakers, land managers, and conservation partners to keep it going."

U.S. Forest Service & Boone and Crockett Club Sign Landmark Public Lands MOU

The agreement underscores the importance of sustaining outdoor recreation with a focus on public access for hunting, angling, wildlife conservation, habitat stewardship, and conservation education. TRCP is proud to be one of 15 collaborating partners working with B&C to identify and develop opportunities to enhance recreational access on public lands.

"Hunters and anglers commonly cite a lack of available access as the number one reason they hang it up and pursue other hobbies - a trend we hope to reverse," said Joel Webster, TRCP's chief conservation officer. "TRCP applauds the U.S. @forestservice and @BC_Club1887 in completing an MOU that will enable cooperation and coordination to enhance outdoor recreation opportunities on America's 193 million acres of National Forest System lands."
