COVID levels may be lower right now, but this is exactly when prevention can make the biggest difference.
Wastewater data shows that COVID often follows a pattern of major seasonal waves. By layering protections early, wearing N95s, improving indoor air, testing, and staying home when sick, we can help slow a summer surge before it builds.
Join WHN’s Don’t Make Waves campaign and help spread the message: take precautions now to protect your community later.

A password alone is not enough to protect our digital accounts. So why rely on just one tool to protect our health?
Vaccines are an important layer of protection, but they work best alongside high-quality masks, testing, staying home when sick, cleaner indoor air and reduced overcrowding.
Each layer helps close the gaps left by the others, reducing the risk of infection, transmission and long-term health consequences.
Read the full blog post to learn why layered protection works and how you can make it more accessible in your community.

Conversations between communities and public health leaders matter.
That's why the World Health Network launched the Health Department Outreach Campaign, a community-led effort to help people connect with their local health departments and advocate for programs and messaging with stronger, science-based infection prevention, awareness about chronic conditions like Long COVID, or whatever public health focus your community needs.
Using our ready-to-use templates, resources, and step-by-step guidance, you can encourage stronger messaging around clean indoor air, masking, vaccination, testing, and other measures that help keep communities healthy.
Local health departments have the power to make a difference. When community members speak up, they help shape the programs and information that protect everyone.

Reducing your risk of serious illness is not only about diet, exercise and routine screenings. Preventing COVID infections can also be an important part of protecting your long-term health.
COVID can affect multiple systems throughout the body and has been associated with increased risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cognitive problems, immune dysfunction and Long COVID. These effects can occur after infections that initially seemed mild, and the risk may increase with repeated infections.

COVID prevention is collective action.
Long COVID can only occur after a COVID infection, so preventing infection and reinfection matters. Cleaner indoor air, access to high-quality respirators, staying home when sick, and reliable testing help protect everyone.

Wildfire smoke can travel hundreds—or even thousands—of miles, affecting communities far beyond the fire line.
Before exercising, working, commuting, or spending extended time outdoors, check your local Air Quality Index (AQI). If air quality is unhealthy, reduce outdoor activity, keep indoor air as clean as possible, and wear a well-fitting N95 or equivalent respirator when you need to go outside.
Air quality can change quickly. Check conditions throughout the day and take precautions before symptoms begin.

Healthcare workers have died, become disabled, and left careers they loved after contracting COVID on the job—often while wearing the exact protection they were told was enough.
Occupational health and safety laws are meant to protect workers from airborne hazards. So why were so many healthcare workers left without adequate respiratory protection?
The latest WHN article examines what went wrong, the lasting impact of workplace-acquired Long COVID, and what must change to protect healthcare workers and patients.

In July 2025, reporting for Cyclospora and several other pathogens became optional within the CDC’s FoodNet surveillance program.
Consistent and complete reporting remains essential. Public health teams rely on case data to identify unusual patterns, connect illnesses across jurisdictions, trace possible food sources, and alert communities. When information is incomplete or delayed, seeing the full picture can become more difficult.
As Cyclospora cases are once again receiving national attention, this is an important reminder: disease reporting is a crucial part of the early-warning infrastructure that helps outbreaks get identified and controlled. The current experience makes clear the need for restoring case reporting for warning and prevention.

When COVID-19 cases fall, protections often disappear before transmission does.
That is how one wave quietly becomes the next.
Breaking the cycle means keeping measures like masking, testing, and cleaner indoor air in place a little longer, until spread is truly under control. The tools exist. We have to use them long enough to work.

Cyclospora cases are increasing in multiple U.S. states, particularly Michigan and Ohio.
Cyclosporiasis is a parasitic illness that can cause watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue, with symptoms that may persist for weeks or return after seeming to improve.
It spreads through contaminated food or water. Protect yourself by washing produce well if it has smooth surfaces, and cooking or heat-treating (70 C / 158 F for 15 minutes) produce with crevices like berries, leafy greens, and herbs.
Wash hands and food surfaces with soap and water, and if your water supply is uncertain, use boiled or 1-micron-filtered water.
If diarrhea or other symptoms persist, contact your healthcare provider and ask to be tested for Cyclospora. It's treatable with a specific antibiotic.
Staying informed and taking simple precautions can help keep you healthy and protect your community.
