I would like to teach you how Islam treats women who do not convert.

On April 22, 1822, after three months of heroic resistance, the Greeks in Naousa finally fell into the hands of the Muslims. For five days, the city became a scene of savage massacres and looting. Particularly shocking is the case of the women of the town, who, in order not to be captured by the Muslims and so that their children would not become Janissaries, chose, together with their children, to throw themselves into the terrible ravine with the rushing waterfalls of the Arapitsa, thus writing their own page of eternal glory through their sacrifice.

So barbaric were Islam and the Turk that, once again, the women preferred death over surrender to the Muslims or converting. Now read carefully.

The wives of the three chieftains of Naousa: Zafeirakis Logothetis, Anastasios Karatasos, and Angelis Gatsos, were sent “as a gift” to the vizier of Thessaloniki.

As the historian Spyridon Trikoupis informs us: “The wife of Gatsos converted to Islam out of cowardice in the face of the tortures, while the other two, refusing to change faith, were nailed upright facing each other on the wall of one of the rooms in the palace of the monstrous vizier, and in the end died after being tortured in various ways…”.

Pouqueville refers to the wife of the chieftain Karatasos, who suffered martyrdom “praying for her executioners and invoking the help of the Virgin Mary,” and confirms that: “The Turks murdered the wives of Karatasos and Zafeirakis because they refused to convert.”

Maria Karatasou, the daughter of a priest, had five children with Anastasios Karatasos. During the massacre of Naousa, she was taken captive and led to Thessaloniki along with her two daughters and her two younger sons. Amid the horrific tortures they endured, the mother witnessed one of her sons being beheaded, with his head thrown demonstratively between her legs. The other son converted to Islam and later became a pasha in Egypt under the name Karatas Pasha. Her eldest son, Giannakis Karatasos, was killed along with Zafeirakis in Naousa, and the Turks sent their heads as a gift (peskesh) to Lubut Pasha.

Maria refused to convert, and for that reason Ebub Lubut locked her in a sack with deadly snakes, where she met her martyrdom. The historian Efstathios Stougiannakis writes: “Yet the deadly poison diffused into the veins of the martyr from the bites killed her in a sweet lethargy, until the final moment praying for her executioners and invoking the Most High and the Virgin.”

And Pouqueville describes to the civilized world, in the darkest colors, the dramatic scenes he witnessed with his own eyes: “Many naked women were placed up to the neck in sacks with cats, snakes, and mice…”.

Equally shocking is the testimony of an elderly woman from Polygyros, included in the book “The Greek Women to the French Women,” published in Paris in 1826. This woman had been captured along with her daughter and imprisoned in Thessaloniki with a hundred women from Naousa. They were asked to renounce their Christian faith, and since all refused, they were led to tortures and martyrdom. She herself was eventually released due to some random event, but she witnessed firsthand not only the martyrdom of her own daughter but also the horrific tortures endured by Maria Karatasou inside the sack with snakes, into which the executioners of Lubut Pasha of Thessaloniki had placed her to inflict a harsh and painful martyrdom.

However, the snakes numbed her with their venom, making her final moments of suffering less agonizing than her torturers had planned. “Bedridden,” notes the elderly woman from Polygyros, “I write this account that will be read in Europe.”

And indeed, her narrative was read, it shocked people, and it continues to shock…

The wives of Zafeirakis and Gatsos also had their own martyrdom: Their heads were smeared with honey and, bound, they were exposed so as to receive the irritating stings of wasps… as well as from passersby. The wife of Zafeirakis was built into the wall up to the neck in the sacred church of Hagia Sophia in Thessaloniki.

She was left there for days as entertainment for the wild mob that went there, cursing and striking her protruding head with sticks… She never retreated for a moment, strengthened until her last breath by prayer.

Her martyrdom lasted five days. A passing Gypsy woman, to hasten her end, threw a large stone at her, and thus the blessed woman delivered her heroic soul into the hands of God, Whom she never denied. The lifeless bodies of all these saintly women ultimately ended up in the sea.
