You asked for my feedback on this contract which I left you. Was that just to "fulfill protocol" and meant nothing? The client had a GBP that I created, gave access to, and gave instructions to make a video verification for which I got no feedback (you have access to this data)
Just received a push notification asking me if I want to update a Google review that I left for a restaurant in the past. This makes a lot of sense. Good for customers reading the reviews and fresh data for Google. Smart move.
Just saw ANOTHER business who had someone move their pin 2 hours away from their actual location. And yep, of course, their rankings tanked. This is getting insane. #StopCrapOnTheMap
π₯³ Proximity is no longer a ranking factor for LSAs. Here's why this is good news...
@CPBarnard was the first to notice that Google updated the LSA help document and removed the mention of "proximity to potential customers' locations" as a ranking factor.
Ginny Marvin, @adsliaison, confirmed the update and clarified that while proximity is considered, it's "often not a key indicator of relevancy".
This is great news. It was kind of stupid that proximity was ever considered in the LSA ranking algorithm. If a business wants its ad to show across all areas of the city, it should be able to pay to show it.
Now, if they would only do the same for service area businesses in the local organic results. Businesses should be able to rank in the areas they specify with service areas, and if you caught my post last week, there are some hints that this might be happening now. Maybe the two are related?!
I'm running some tests and will report on my results soon.

@DarrenShaw_@randfish Hilarious, the fact that it keeps responding with other locations... Reminds me of school when the teacher says "Wrong" to an answer, and I start giving random ones π
π¨ I think there is a NEW Local Ranking Factor!
Local SEOs have always known that setting service areas on your Google Business Profile has no impact on rankings. We've gone so far as to call this "factor" a local search myth.
But, I've heard a couple people say they think they're seeing an impact now, and yesterday, @JimAlle76608945 showed me some reasonably convincing data to support the idea.
Here are details:
πΉ Using the lat/long data from Pleper, Jim noticed that his mobile notary business's "pin" was located in the middle of a farmer's field.
πΉ Local Falcon scans showed that he was ranking around that spot, but not ranking very well in the main area he wanted to target. (see "before" image)
πΉ He updated the service areas in GBP to be more tightly focused around the area he wanted to rank in.
πΉ Updated Local Falcon scans now show him ranking better in that area! (see "after" image)
πΉ Changing the service areas in GBP also changed the lat/long in Pleper to the area he was targeting.
So it kinda looks like Google has changed something and services ares DO impact rankings now.
A couple questions come to mind:
1οΈβ£ How significant/minor is this factor? How much can it move the needle? (or shift the grid?)
2οΈβ£ Do services areas only have an impact if your address is removed from the GBP? (I'm guessing yes)
I have some tests running right now and look forward to sharing the results!

Google is testing displaying social media posts prominently on Google Business Profiles (first screenshot) - via @BubblesUp.
These are Facebook posts, not Google Posts.
In this treatment, the social posts are shown prominently high up on the Profile, as opposed to Google Posts, which are relegated to the basement.
Does this hint at Google getting rid of Google Posts? Hard to say at this point.
The Takeaway:
πΉ Make sure to link your social channels to your Google Business Profile.
If they roll this feature out, it will get you some premium placement for your marketing messages via social posts. I don't hate it.
