My brain used to ruin entire weeks over things that haven't happened yet. Tell me “we need to talk, later this week”, aaand boom! 😂
Now though? Nope! Memory like a goldfish. If it's important, I am sure you'll remind me again, later.
Two weeks ago, popular Nigerian comedian Lasisi Elenu posted a video to Nigeria's President and all 36 state governors about the state of our hospitals.
His mother died in 2022 after being moved between federal hospitals and turned away for bed space....
The writer Chimamanda Adichie lost her 21-month-old son in a Lagos hospital earlier this year.
My mother was a nurse. I grew up in health centers and later worked in that system myself.
They're right about all of it.
I want to add the part I watched from behind the desk.
P.S. If you're getting married and you're reading this, I'm still coming. Send the fabric. I've made my peace.
P.P.S. If you have unsewn aso-ebi in your wardrobe right now, say the number. I'll go first: two.
Weekend Rant: The aso-ebi tax is real and we are all paying it.
I have fabric in my wardrobe now that I have never sewn. Never worn. Never will.
Collectively? I paid someone's starting salary for cloth I have never touched. 😂
And the maddening part is I would do it again....
Who did this to us?!
I don't have a solution. I'm not brave enough to be the first person to say no.
I just think if we're going to run an economy on this, somebody should at least be sewing the clothes.
I've been noticing something about myself over the past few weeks.
The things that were draining me the most were never the things I was paying attention to.
Not the big obvious stressors. Not the problems I had named and was actively trying to solve...
I don't have a clean resolution here. I'm still in the middle of it.
But I've started paying attention to the things I was deliberately not looking at.
And it turns out that's most of the work.
