Some fresh graduates are confused on the career path to follow.
They are still looking for jobs...but are eager to go back to school or start writing professional exams.
I understand them perfectly. The need to get more certificates to enhance your chances of getting a job is valid.
But from my experience; you should consider this.
1. Willingness to work anywhere.
If you are willing to work anywhere..
It's very likely that you will get a job in a field different from the course you studied.
This is the reason why I tell people to get a job first before deciding the course to do at post graduate level or the professional certifications to get.
For example You studied food science and got a job in a bank. If you enjoy working in the financial sector, you can do professional exams with ICAN, ACCA, CIBN, CIT or even do an MBA.
You don't need to worry because your first job has determined your career path.
2. You want to stick to your field/Or have interest in another field.
Some of us don't want to work in other fields. We want to practice what we studied in school.
If you are in this category, you can proceed to do professional courses in the field you are interested in.
Others have interest in a particular field and are eager to get certifications in that area.
For example, some people studied courses they were given during admission or courses imposed on them by their parents.
After graduation, they may have interest in other fields. It's okay to start doing your certifications since you are sure it's what you want to do.
Please ensure you think these things through before making a decision.
I studied microbiology, worked for close to two years in the laboratory before joining a bank.
I left after 21 months for a security based job and decided to stick to a career in security.
I did my PGD in criminology and security studies and even got an international certification in security.
Will I change my career again?
Time will tell. But for now I am a security professional and I love it.
Have a great evening..
