To those who still prefer to view the USSR through rose-tinted glasses: the Soviet experiment was never the anti-imperialist, egalitarian worker’s paradise sold in the brochures. Long after the initial bloodbath of the Red Terror and Stalinist purges, the regime settled into a systematic, bureaucratic totalitarianism that remained deeply oppressive well into the late 1970s. It was an engine engineered to crush individual agency and erase distinct national identities, aiming to forge a single, compliant mass: the Homo Sovieticus, who served the state without question.
For Ukrainians and other non-russian peoples, basic rights were strictly tied to complete cultural surrender. While unemployment was criminalized under "parasitism" laws, securing a decent career or higher education required total russification. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of young Ukrainians were systematically dispatched to the Far East and the Virgin Lands (Tselina), while russian cadres, managers, and military officers were moved in to replace them.
Life in the provinces exposed the true nature of this state capitalism. Rural Ukrainians who fed the entire empire were intentionally denied internal passports until the mid-to-late 1970s. Without passports or written permission from farm directors, collective farm workers could not legally leave their villages—living as modern serfs well into the late 20th century.
This reality utterly shattered the illusion of Soviet equality. Even Stalin explicitly elevated ethnic russians as the "leading nation," proving the USSR was nothing more than a traditional empire wearing red rhetoric where one group was far "more equal" than the rest. Western academics were easily fooled by carefully staged Potemkin villages and state-curated tours, completely blind to the exploitation behind the curtain. Behind this curated exterior lay systemic decay, hypocrisy, and forced coercion—the very weight that ultimately caused the Soviet Union to collapse.
Today, modern russia relies on that same old playbook, hiding lawlessness, corruption, and imperial hostility behind a polished facade. But history proves that no empire can suppress truth, self-determination, and human dignity forever. Just as the Soviet system eventually dissolved under the weight of its own lies, russia must dismantle its imperial mindset.

Today, many were shocked by yet another video of the drone “safari” Russians are carrying out against civilians in Kherson. A Russian drone deliberately hunted down a man selling vegetables and detonated right next to him. The Russians even admitted to the crime, showing zero regret and openly boasting about tormenting people. The man was wounded in the blast. Every single day, ordinary people in Kherson face these Russian "safaris."

The world must see this. It must see every piece of evidence that Russia has gone mad and that its soldiers take pleasure in killing and abusing civilians. Without pressure on Russia, the dismantling of its capacity for aggression, and real security guarantees, it is simply impossible to imagine the world being able to coexist with this evil. We must remain resolute in defending life. We must act and support life in ways that force Russia to seriously think about peace rather than expanding the range of its drones.

This is not just about Ukraine. Russia’s campaign against human life must be stopped here in Ukraine before it spreads further. Finland and Kazakhstan, the Baltic states and Poland, the countries of the South Caucasus, Romania, and Moldova—all should work together to ensure real security guarantees and bring Russia’s war to an end. Peace is needed, which requires cooperation among everyone in the world who truly values peace. Thank you to everyone standing with Ukraine!
