Here's the Real Story on T1D Cure Research: Lack of Alignment

When donors give to diabetes-focused nonprofits, the expectation is that their donations are fueling cure research. Unfortunately, this is often not the case.

For years, we’ve seen a lack of alignment between donors and nonprofits, where only a small portion is given to T1D cure research—or T1D, period.

T1D Donors speak up! If you donate to a diabetes nonprofit, tell them your donation is for a T1D cure, and they are obligated to treat your contribution as a restricted donation.

What it will take to get a T1D cure: Shift from Non-profit to Commercial

For decades, the search for a #T1D cure was driven mostly by nonprofits and academia.

Today, commercial biotech may be the biggest reason for hope.

Companies like Vertex, Sana Biotech, and others are investing billions into:
• Stem-cell derived islet replacement
• Immune protection technologies
• Scalable manufacturing needed for real-world cures

Why does this matter?

Because a cure won’t just require scientific discovery. It will require:
✔️ Large-scale clinical trials
✔️ Regulatory approval
✔️ Manufacturing at global scale
✔️ Delivery to millions of patients

That level of execution takes industry. The future of a T1D cure will likely come from a partnership between researchers, nonprofits, patients—and commercial innovators willing to bring therapies across the finish line.

What it will take to get a T1D cure: The Current Research Pathways.

Outlined here are the research pathways that can deliver a type 1 diabetes Practical Cure: any solution which delivers a near-normal lifestyle for people living with established type 1 diabetes.

There are three pathways currently identified.

1. Cell Supply
2. Cell Protection
3. Advanced Insulin Delivery Systems

Cell Supply and Cell Protection will likely need to be combined to deliver a cure. Today, there have been many advances made in Cell Supply efficacy, with Protection remaining the biggest hurdle.
