Sometimes you’ll be blamed for problems you didn’t create because it’s easier for people to point at you than face the truth. Your job isn’t to carry someone else’s projection. Stand in the truth, keep your boundaries, and let people take responsibility for their own choices.
When someone can’t win the conversation, they may try to get you upset instead. They interrupt, throw in personal comments, bring up old issues, or say things they know will trigger you, not because it helps their point, but because it makes you lose focus. The moment you start reacting instead of thinking, you’ve made their job easier. Stay calm, keep your attention on the issue at hand, and don’t let someone else choose your state of mind.
Lesson in effective communication: maintaining self-respect doesn’t have to mean getting angry when someone lashes out at you.
Many of us think protecting our self-respect looks like responding defensively, criticizing or insulting, calling someone out or giving them advice (or a piece of our mind).
But it’s best to know when a conversation is unlikely to be effective, and prepare to calmly respond.
Having a gentle, easy manner, without making light of the situation. No apologies. Being honest without being cruel, and acting on values.
Good modeling of communication for those of us with BPD, not to mention loved ones who may struggle to know how to balance staying kind AND firm, strong AND gentle, honest AND honorable.
