Microsoft just made post-quantum cryptography available for Windows Insider (the early-access playground for new Windows features, think beta for the world’s most-used OS) and Linux (the open-source backbone of servers, dev tools, and even your smart fridge).
That’s huge! Together, Windows and Linux power around 75% of desktops worldwide, and most of the developer’s workflow.
Now, devs can experiment with NIST-approved quantum-safe algorithms (ML-KEM and ML-DSA, aka CRYSTALS-Kyber and CRYSTALS-Dilithium) right inside Windows Insider builds and Linux via SymCrypt-OpenSSL. They can import, export, and validate quantum-resistant certificates, test hybrid cryptography, and start prepping their apps for a quantum future, before quantum computers turn today’s encryption into Swiss cheese.
