Unfortunately this week isn't a fun post, but it's important. This week the IUCN Red List declared the Java stingaree extinct. 💔
An assessment led by Julia Constance revealed this to be the first marine fish extinction caused by humans. https://t.co/cUsrSN7iX5

Inspired by @LucButtons comment about the "cosmic ray" last week, the Irish for the starry ray (aka thorny skate) is roc réaltach (literally "starry ray"). 🌟🤩
🤩 Still blown away by this encounter with a critically endangered female Flapper Skate (Dipturus intermedius) - the worlds largest skate! During a shore dive at Macduff yesterday with @DiverChrisR 🤯 So so special!!!

Successful start to the week with the first skate tagged in Courtmacsherry. Over the next 2 yrs we will be tracking its movements to identify residency within one of the last known refuges for this species in Ireland 🌊
Thanks Phillip and the team at RTE for sharing this most amazing encounter of a Critically Endangered Angelshark in Galway yesterday!
Just fantastic to see! 😍⬇️
