Stephen King wrote The Long Walk in 1966, as a 19-year-old college freshman. First novel he ever finished. It took 59 years to reach a screen, and the way the wait ended is the strangest part of the story.

Fifty teenage boys walk until they drop. Fall below three miles per hour, you get a warning. Three warnings, a soldier shoots you. The state televises the whole thing and the crowds cheer.

King was watching classmates get drafted while he wrote it. Critics have read it as a Vietnam allegory ever since, with its televised draft, friends dying for no reason anyone can articulate, a country treating it as entertainment. He published it in 1979 under the pen name Richard Bachman because his publisher feared flooding the market with King titles.

Hollywood circled for decades. George Romero tried in 1988. Frank Darabont, the man behind Shawshank and The Green Mile, held the rights by 2007. Neither could crack a story where the entire plot is boys walking.

Then the genre it invented got adapted first. Battle Royale in 2000. The Hunger Games in 2012, a franchise that grossed over $3 billion on the kids-die-for-televised-spectacle premise a teenager sketched in a Maine dorm room in 1966.

The director who finally filmed The Long Walk? Francis Lawrence, who made four Hunger Games movies. The original had to wait for its descendant to prove the market, then hired the descendant's director to get made.

King added one correction after 59 years. He asked the filmmakers to slow the required pace from his 4 mph to 3 mph, because he'd decided his own number was unrealistic.

The movie cost $20 million, grossed $63 million, and this month it's the #1 movie on HBO Max.
