Solapur, Maharashtra: Awez Qureshi, Mustakeem Qureshi and Natigence Qureshi beat up driver Sabla Shrimant Udanshiv 18 after he went to invite friend Muddatsar Qureshi to a Ganpati-Gauri Laxmi puja meal.

Muddatsar hadn't shown up and wasn't answering calls. Sabla went to his house on Qureshi Galli around 11:15 PM to invite him.

There he found Awez, Mustakeem and Natigence, who said: "ye dekhke Mahara ke, in ko kaatna padta, in ki behen ko cho*na padta" — naming his caste and threatening to cut him down and violate his sister. They then beat him with sticks along with others. He bled from the nose.

Not one, not two, but half a dozen girls reached a police station in Rewa, MP, and filed a complaint against Shaikh Pathan.

This weekend I was in Minnesota for the @CoHNAOfficial Community Gala, where I was invited to speak about my own journey as a Hindu growing up in Canada and eventually finding my way to social media.

My message to the capacity crowd: The reason I can call myself “Hindu” today is because of the sacrifices of all those who came before me.

Hindus in North America today are at an inflection point where we need to find our voices and articulate a vision for our community.

Gone are the days when keeping your head down and assuming that being a model citizen is enough. Yes, keeping the tradition alive is absolutely necessary, but it requires more.

It requires that we overcome our fear of speaking up about issues affecting Hindus in North America. It requires that we devote the necessary resources to advocacy, both through volunteer efforts and financially. It requires that we embrace our traditions through daily sadhana and not simply be observers of the Hindu tradition, as many are apt to do.

As I said last night, that’s like going to the gym, watching someone else lift weights, and thinking it’s going to make you stronger.

We can only advocate for Hinduism if we actually do the things that make us Hindu.

The night featured many young speakers who are being raised in an era where it is going to be normal to see Hindus advocating for themselves.

The sacrifices we make today will pay dividends for generations to come.
