@AdamBandt Her answer quickly averted to attacking the Greens on irrelevant points. This is Labor's go-to response on climate, it is used to avoid accountability. They use this tactic so often that you have to wonder whether Labor are more afraid of the Greens than climate collapse.
@mrseankelly This assumes Labor are pursuing incrementalism in good faith. But every decision so far can be traced to corporate capture.
The problem isn't that they're doing progressive politics slowly, it's that they're doing neoliberal politics at full speed.
@Claire_katz@Surlysimon@AdamBandt@Wendy_Bacon This quote has been cherry picked from a longer quote where CHIA heavily criticised the HAFF for not doing enough. It doesn't refute my previous statement that no $$ would have been spent for 3 years, and that Greens have secured a deal to spend another $3b now.
@Surlysimon@AdamBandt@Wendy_Bacon Nothing would have been done yet if the bill had passed in March. Labor's original bill wouldnt have spent anything for 3 years and only if the fund gained returns.
@CronkyLady Yeah I agree with that, it's a necessary ad and probably should have been released month ago.
Full disclosure I wasn't born in Australia and don't relate to the ad at all. But maybe thats also relevant as 30% of Australians weren't born here.
@CronkyLady I think you're right that it is targeting boomers and aligns with their view of australia's cultural story.
But therein also lies an issue, because it's further embedding that story which has long suppressed colonial history and non-white voices.
@APoliticalPope @DavidPocock@AlboMP I say Labor is alienating unions because they have been choosing to side with corporations over workers since in power and union leaders have expressed more frustration. Also we're seeing an increase of union donations to Greens and a decrease of union donations to Labor.
@APoliticalPope @DavidPocock@AlboMP Of the ones I googled just now, CFMEU, Aus Unions and NCTU support renewables. It makes sense because its a big opportinity to create jobs.
@APoliticalPope @DavidPocock@AlboMP I googled "which unions support climate action" and got a bunch: UWU, Australian Unions, CPSU, NTEU, CFMEU, ANMF. There are likely others. Unions have been working with the climate movement for a while and commonly organise joint actions.
@APoliticalPope @DavidPocock@AlboMP Basically by siding with their fossil fuel donors, Labor are alienating their union base & it's creating tension. Labor don't have a plan for transitioning workers which is a worry. Labor risk losing their union support base to the Greens who have a good just transition policy.
@APoliticalPope @DavidPocock@AlboMP Yeah I don't know of any unions fighting against climate action but there could be. The ACTU supports climate action & are calling for a "just transition" to ensure workers & communities are taken care of as fossil fuels are phased out.
