Bitcoin did $17.7 million in transaction fees this past Monday. More than any single day during the frenzied bull market of 2021, and 50x the average daily fees in 2022.

Some people will say this is a flash in the pan. That NFTs on Bitcoin are a silly fad. That increasing demand around the new BRC-20 token standard on Bitcoin is somehow bad for the network.

I think I’ll take the other side of that.

I’m becoming convinced that Bitcoin is going through a paradigm shift.

That Bitcoin is more than just a monetary/store of value and a peer-to-peer payment network.

Because inscriptions (digital artifacts, i.e. text, images, mp3, video, etc. anchored to an individual sat) directly on Bitcoin appear to be the tip of the iceberg.

It's possible we are about to introduce the commercial layer to storing important information on Bitcoin. This could include things like deeds, trusts, titles, contracts, corporate actions, etc.

Furthermore, one of the primary challenges with tokenized real-world assets & security tokens today is bridging the on-chain world with off-chain legal documents. If these documents can be stored directly on-chain, it's possible that Bitcoin inscriptions could be the catalyst for an explosion of innovation in this area.

All of these activities require a *one-time block space fee* for immutable and auditable data storage.

As the most decentralized and secure public blockchain, #Bitcoin is made for this.

And I’ll be the first to raise my hand and say that I did not see this coming. I thought we would first see a Bitcoin-backed stablecoin drive transaction fees around instant payments on layer 2.

But the 8th wonder of the world (Bitcoin) has a way of humbling us all over time.
