On this day in AD 14, Augustus died at Nola, aged 75. He died in the same room his father had died in, on the same day of the year he had first taken the consulship 57 years earlier, which is either a beautiful coincidence or the last piece of stagecraft by the greatest political performer Rome ever produced.

The final scene is the tell.

He spent his last morning having his hair combed and his sagging jaw propped up. He called in his friends. He asked them one question:

"Have I played the comedy of life well?"

Then, when they said yes, he gave them the tag line that Roman actors used to close a performance:

"If the play has pleased you, give it your applause, and send us off with gratitude."

Think about what he is admitting there. Not "did I rule well." Not "was I a good man." He is telling the room, in his last conscious minutes, that the whole thing was a role. Fifty seven years of consulships and tribunician powers and "restoring the Republic" and refusing crowns and calling himself merely First Citizen. A part, played to the end, and he knew it, and he wanted the applause.

His actual last words were to his wife of 51 years: "Livia, remember our marriage, and farewell."

Some Romans said Livia poisoned the figs. Nobody ever proved it. Tacitus mentions it anyway, which is the historian's way of poisoning the figs himself.

His body was carried to Rome at night, because it was August and the roads were hot. The Senate voted him a god. A senator named Numerius Atticus swore under oath that he had personally watched Augustus ascend to heaven from the funeral pyre. Livia paid him a million sesterces.

The teenager who once needed a centurion's sword to get a magistracy became, by that same date sixty years later, a legally certified deity with a paid eyewitness.

And the empire he built ran for another four centuries in the west and fourteen hundred years in the east.
