The Everfrost Court — Caledrenne, the Hearthless Embrace
Frost creeps across an open book in the endless Archive. Mystran traces its delicate patterns with one pale claw before lifting her amber eyes to greet her visitors.
"Ah, my darlings. Come closer. I have something lovely to share."
She turns the book, revealing a palace beneath a violet winter sky.
"Have you ever missed someone so terribly you could almost feel them beside you? Listened for footsteps that never came, or treasured the memory of a voice you feared you might never hear again?"
One of the little eyes in her braid blinks.
"Longing. Such a peculiar thing. An ache, certainly, but there is sweetness in anticipation, too. Mortals have crossed oceans, written poetry, and ruined perfectly good lives for what they yearn to hold."
Her laughter is soft and delighted.
"Oh, how I adore that about you."
Frost rises from the page, assembling itself into a miniature court of glittering spires.
"Today, we visit Everfrost, where winter is not merely cold, but the distance between reaching hands. The empty place at a table. The breath before a long-awaited reunion."
"And there resides Caledrenne, the Hearthless Embrace. The Fey of Longing."
The spires fold into the likeness of a graceful figure, her crystalline ribbons catching a blush of sunset.
"Lavender skin, lilac-touched hair, and all the splendor of a frozen horizon. You might expect a distant, unfeeling queen. Oh, quite the contrary."
"She delights in affection and company, in the delicious promise of closeness. Proud, playful, and rather reluctant to release what she holds dear."
Mystran closes her fingers around the little figure, watching violet light seep between them.
"An embrace is precious partly because it must end, is it not? Yet how dearly we wish for another moment."
"The Fey fascinate me. Where mortals carry a thousand feelings through a lifetime, a Fey may embody one so completely that a whole court grows around it. And still, no feeling is ever simple."
"Longing can inspire devotion or obsession, a journey home or a pursuit without end. I shall not tell you which is more beautiful, my darlings."
She opens her hand. The light returns to the book, and its pages settle shut.
"Should you wander into Everfrost, remember Caledrenne. Perhaps she will welcome you. Perhaps you will understand why parting can be so difficult."
Her dark lips curve into a knowing smile.
"Now tell me: if you could keep one moment of your life forever, which would it be?"
"Ah, choose carefully. There are so many worth remembering."
Come along, then. There is still so much to discover.
