“What is wrong with African Startup Founders?!”
Pretty sure this is the question already being nursed in the minds of millions of African-centric investors, VCs and even users who keep up to date with the news.
First, Payday. Now, Dash. All within the span of few months.
Before these “fundraise & crash startups” start casting a bad light on the African tech space, this needs to be said - IT’s NOT AN AFRICAN THING!
As humans, we have the tendency to quickly stereotype an entire region even when the frequency of related events are low, but with high media exposure.
Don’t do that here!
Once upon a time, I co-founded a startup and we successfully raised some money which could easily have given us at least a 3-year run way.
Initially, I had my eyes on the accounts, so I could tell. But not for long. The project founder, not African, cut me off from the books, determined his own pay and mine. All efforts to keep him accountable fell on deaf ears.
Long story short, I left the company and not long after it came crashing down. Reports from some employees I stayed in touch with confirmed some, if not all, of my suspicions. Funds were being diverted for personal ventures and the founder claimed he was only collecting some chicken change as remuneration.
Comparing reports from different sources involved in the business operations and himself, you could hardly reconcile the discrepancy.
With that established, I’ve learnt from my personal experience that projects which end up this way are run by founders whose #1 vision for the project is to raise or primarily make money.
I’m not against founders making money, it’s the reward for building, but at least build with a vision to solve a problem. It’s not hard to see then that such projects have no personal problem story driving their cause.
While this is a tough problem to solve for investors, it can help if they can show these founders a vision of what’s possible in the long run if they actually solve the problem they build towards.
Show them what’s in it for them, long term that far exceeds the satisfaction of a fat monthly cheque, luxury cars & mansions.
Some accountability systems in place as well wouldn’t hurt.
For founders contemplating taking the same route, there’s more to building than that money!
I come in peace.
