In the 1950s, small groups of English men were already trying to use violence to force black African immigrants out.

It didn't work.

Contemporary Pathé newsreel says that "violence isn't the British way to solve this".

So, the implication is that we should have used political and civic institutions to solve the problem.

But how did that go?
