Nursing staff in Government Hospitals have job security, their aversion towards work is because no action can be taken against them. Most people don’t know it but a lot of negligence accounts to nursing staff’s incompetence. Doctors shouldn’t be blamed.

A well qualified doctor, Dr Mahesh Devanani, Medical Superintendent of AIIMS Jodhpur, was summoned to the house of an MP and former Union Minister and scolded for the only fault of refusing free tests for the minister’s wife. He was humiliated to the extent that he resigned from his post.

Are rules only for common citizens and not for ministers? If this is happening inside AIIMS, imagine the pressure on doctors in other medical colleges. How long will doctors be forced to bow down to VIP culture instead of upholding ethics?

An MBBS classmate of mine, now working abroad, called on me, after several yrs. He had been a Professor at a Pvt Chennai Medical College & Hospital, fr many yrs before moving abroad.
I asked him, what had changed. He pondered on the question fr a while, before answering.
" Money. Money is not everything. It is the only thing. Earlier, I ws paid a few 1000s as salary in India. *** country realized my worth. I am paid tens of lakhs per month.
"Money has transformed my life. I was born poor. I ws determined not to die poor. India treated me, a Professor with multiple medical degrees, shabbily. I cd afford only a bike here. Today, I drive the latest cars. I hv even bought a BMW fr my daughter settled in Chennai.
" When my wife requests to buy a Sari worth 50,000 Rs, I ask her ' Why a beggar's amt? Buy a Silk Sari worth 1 lac.' Ur houses in Chennai will be flooded in the monsoon. Mine will not. I hv never known powercuts in *** country. No potholes. No stray animals. No mamool( bribe ) to the local Dada,& police Inspector while building a new house.
" I eat only gourmet food, drink the headiest of liquor, attend music concerts worth ur yr's salary, take vacations in the Swiss Alps. When my extended family hs problems at Chennai, I just throw bundles of money, at IAS/IPS officers to solve them. I hv taken revenge on my enemies. I hv found fulfillment.
"There is Work-Life Balance in *** country. I won't be assaulted by pt attenders, who think an Indian Pt is immortal till killed by a Dr, at a hospital. I never step out of air-conditioning. Attend the poshest gyms. Hv a personal trainer & dietician. Money has completely changed my life.
You missed the bus, & stayed in India. I took it, & found heaven. Who wants to suffer as a Dr in India, filling forms in Triplicate, taking Photocopies of certificates, waiting fr hrs at the Tehsildar's office, & the corrupt Police Stations? My relatives in India, today receive me in reverence"

What people in 2025 do not realise and it baffles us doctors
1. We have eradicated smallpox, very nearly,
Polio - this would kill, maim and leave you disabled
2. We do not die of TB, a wound infection, a broken limb let alone from heart disease or cancer as inevitably as we did
3. We have researched a wide array of what can save lives - from kangaroo mother care (which is just mother holding her newborn skin to skin) to gene therapy in life limiting diseases
4. We know what exactly is the compound in a medicine- which form of the salt, what purity, what concentration, what happens when it enters the body - how it does its job, how it is cleared from the system, what would the safe dose be, how to titrate, what would be the expected and unexpected side effects, how to balance the risks with benefits - we don’t do potions, there is precision instead
5. We can explain health and ill health, disease processes, trajectories, outcomes down to the last molecular level and we have exploited that to create medications and treatments

Lastly, we will never find a magic wand. If we did, I would wave it on people to get them think rationally and not risk their health to AYUSH quackery and equally to badly practiced modern medicine.

Is it just my college or almost all colleges’ radio department is so lazy that they don’t care if patients suffer
