I will never get over how Scripture told us to renew our minds and take our thoughts captive long before we had the language of neuroplasticity
What you dwell on literally shapes patterns in your brain
God knew exactly how He designed us
“God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7
Not fear, but power.
Not fear, but love.
Not fear, but self-control.
This world is temporary. Don't spend all your time preparing for a place you're leaving while neglecting the One who has prepared your eternal home. Put Christ first.
The human arm vs. the Lord our God.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him, for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles.” 2 Chronicles 32:7–8
My therapist once told me: Imagine being bitten by a snake and, instead of treating the bite, you waste time chasing the snake to understand why it bit you and prove you didn't deserve it.
Nobody has ever made the dark feel as real as old Disney did.
In these films the night isn't an absence of light. It's a color, and someone mixed it by hand…
Disney had its own paint laboratory, built by a woman named Mary Weiser, the first of its kind in animation. Its job was to invent shades that did not exist yet. In the early thirties, when the studio was still making shorts, there were around eighty shades on the shelves. By the time they finished Snow White there were fifteen hundred.
Every one of them went on by hand, cel by cel, and each cel needed hours to dry before it could be photographed.
The Ink and Paint department was almost entirely women. According to the Walt Disney Family Museum, the paints were sometimes named after them, and to have a color carry your name was considered an honour.
So the dark of Bambi's forest, the lamplight in Geppetto's workshop, the blue at Cinderella's attic window: none of it is a filter or a setting or a dimmer turned down. Each is a specific colour that a specific person mixed in a jar, and some of those jars had her name on the label.
That is why these scenes still feel more alive than anything made since. We went from hands, to computers, to AI, and at every step there is a little less of the person left in it…
The author Joanna Maciejewska said it better than anyone: "I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes."
How the Christian work ethic takes hold in the world.
“You yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you.” 2 Thessalonians 3:7–8
Underrated life advice: Be fully where your feet are. When you're at work, work. When you're with family, be with family. When you're resting, rest. Most people are physically present and mentally everywhere else.
“He humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.” Deuteronomy 8:3
God’s appointed hunger and God’s appointed manna teach this: behind all of it is the will and the word of God, and our lives hang on that.
Why is anxiety about the future a form of pride? Today on Solid Joys, John Piper uses 1 Peter 5:6–7 to find the answer. The remedy? Turn from self-reliance to God-reliance, and put your faith in the all-sufficient power of the promise of his future grace.

“Those who look to the Lord are radiant,
and their faces shall never be ashamed.” Psalm 34:5
A radiant face is a rejoicing heart breaking out through facial muscles.
Out of the abundance of the heart the face frowns or is radiant.
