Tonight's the night! TOTAL lunar eclipse across the entire United States! Weather permitting, totality will be visible everywhere.

For 58 minutes, the moon will slip into the Earth's shadow. Most of the sunlight which ordinarily illuminates the full moon will be blocked.

The only light reaching the moon will be what skims along the edge of Earth through our atmosphere. That will filter out the shorter wavelengths, leaving behind only a reddish-brown color. (It's the same effect that makes sunrises and sunsets look red... the light is coming through the atmosphere at a lower angle, meaning it has a longer path and gets more filtering.)

As such, the reddish-brown that you see will actually be the combined light of all of Earth's sunrises and sunsets projected onto the moon simultaneously. Isn't that beautiful? A bit poetic.
