Even after the Treaty of Troyes, which came into effect in the Kingdom of France in 1420 and legitimized the English presence, a problem remained: the French population could not overlook the "foreign" nature of that presence, a sentiment shared even by their Burgundian allies.
English soldiers and officials "spoke poor French", while "not all French people spoke English".
This led to dozens, if not hundreds, of disputes in the streets and countryside, brawls in taverns and at city gates, and mutinies in military camps and garrisons involving French militiamen and soldiers serving the Dual Monarchy within the northern regions of the French kingdom.
Although the Duke of Bedford sought to reassure the French population in 1422, and the Parisians in particular, by claiming that the future King Henry VI was more French than English, discontent persisted :
A priest taking part in a religious procession recorded in his journal how, as he approached the gate Saint-Martin in Paris, the Duke of Bedford’s retinue galloped through the gateway at full speed, forcing the crowd to scatter and splashing him with freezing mud, an act that infuriated the crowd. Thomas, Lord Roos, also provoked intense resentment among Parisians by having bugles and trumpets sound his arrival as he entered the city, "as if he were some king, duke, or count."
Knight on urban patrol
This was a high-risk, high-responsibility assignment, particularly for those tasked with keeping watch on the ramparts or working alongside the "quartenniers" (officers holding both administrative and military authority over a city district). The knights were so well-equipped with armor and weaponry that, for instance, in 1420 Paris, a force of just 300 English troops (combined with the Burgundian army & militia) sufficed to police a population numbering in the tens of thousands.
In Norwegian, the word "ro" means both to row and to be at peace—a fitting reflection of Norway's seafaring traditions and breathtaking fjords that inspire us.
On behalf of the entire Viking family across our fleet, good luck to our partners the Norwegian Football Association and the Norwegian national team as they face off in the quarter-finals on the world stage today.
Onwards, and heia Norge! 🇳🇴
@Dragoonranger01@Asst_to_the_RM@KTB_500 I recommend reviewing the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) and these cases.
Singh v. Berger, Capt. Simratpal Singh and the Chaplain (Rabbi) Menachem Stern.
@Dragoonranger01@Asst_to_the_RM@KTB_500 Beards don't interfer with mission accomplishment. We allow for a variety of hair stylea without issue. Your stance is an opinion that is odds with the Constitution, USC, and court precedent.
@Dragoonranger01@Asst_to_the_RM@KTB_500 The problem is that stance violates the Constitution, federal law, and court precedent that allows for beards as protected faith practice. It make more sense to allow of beards and enforce an appropriate standard of wear. It works for most all of NATO allies.
@TheIOGuy FWIW the Army's policy keeps all previously approved ones pending review by the Army G1. It will be interesting to see whether the Army follows the Constitution, USC, and prior court decisions that allow beards for religious reasons, or bows to the Secretary's direction.
