Vietnam Speaks Out on China's Seizure of the Paracel Islands
Vietnam has established sovereignty over the Paracel Islands in accordance with international law, and no use of force can create a sovereignty claim over these islands, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"Vietnam's sovereignty over the Paracel Islands has been established since at least the 17th century, in accordance with international law, and has been exercised in a peaceful, continuous and public manner by successive Vietnamese states," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said on January 20 in response to a question about Vietnam's stance on China's seizure of the Paracels in 1974.
According to the spokesperson, Vietnam has provided sufficient legal basis and historical evidence to affirm its sovereignty over the Paracel and Spratly Islands. Any use of force or threat to use force in international relations, especially the use of force to settle territorial disputes, goes completely against the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and seriously violates international law.
"These actions cannot establish a basis for sovereignty, nor can they change the truth that sovereignty over the Paracel Islands belongs to Vietnam," Ms. Hang emphasized.
On January 19, 1974, China used force to seize control of the Paracel Islands after a naval battle with South Vietnam's navy. Since July 2012, China has established what it calls "Sansha City" on Woody Island in the Paracels, in an attempt to annex the islands in the South China Sea, including the Paracels and Spratlys which belong to Vietnam.
Trump Claims He Saved Millions From 'Nuclear Holocaust'
The former president asserted during a deposition with New York prosecutors that he had prevented nuclear war from breaking out.
"I was extremely busy. I viewed my job as the most important in the world: saving millions of lives. I think that if I didn't solve the North Korea problem, we would have seen a nuclear holocaust," Donald Trump declared during an April 2023 deposition with New York state prosecutors.
The deposition footage was released by CBS on January 19th, after months of court battles for media access under freedom of information rights. The deposition was part of an ongoing lawsuit between the New York Attorney General's office and the Trump Organization over allegations of financial fraud by Trump.
Trump insisted he was not involved in the Trump Organization's business dealings after taking office due to the enormous national security pressures of his new position.
Kevin Wallace, an attorney with New York Attorney General Lettia James' office, immediately interrupted Trump, reminding him that he did not want to waste the 7 hours of deposition time listening to discussion of nuclear war.
Also during the deposition, the former president praised his New York properties for benefiting the city and creating jobs for thousands of people. He also criticized local leadership for allowing "rampant violent crime" on New York streets.
In a November 2023 court deposition, Trump reiterated that he was not involved in the Trump Organization's business after being elected, stressing that he was "extremely busy at the White House" and could not be distracted by business matters.
Trump is accused of fraudulently inflating his assets annually by 17-35%, equating to $812 million - $2.2 billion between 2011-2021. James' filings allege Trump's asset inflation constituted hundreds of millions in illicit profits.
Earlier this year, the New York Attorney General requested Trump pay back $370 million, far exceeding original estimates of $250 million.
The Trump Organization denies wrongdoing, insisting valuations of the company's assets, including Trump Tower in Manhattan, were made in good faith and banks loaned money without issue.
