Just received this note from a SpaceX engineer helping on the ground in North Carolina.

@FEMA is not merely failing to adequately help people in trouble, but is actively blocking citizens who try to help!

“Hey Elon, update here on site of Asheville, NC. We have powered up two large operating bases for choppers to deliver goods into hands. We’ve deployed 300+ starlinks and outpour is it has saved many lives.

The big issue is FEMA is actively blocking shipments and seizing goods and services locally and locking them away to state they are their own. Friends, I don’t want to panic people about solar flares and coronal mass ejections. That said, we as a species are running completely irrational risks for no reason whatsoever. Our vulnerability is not in ANYONE’S interest. We can’t bring the risk to zero, but we can do A LOT to reduce it—cheaply. At the point the sun flings a civilization-ending kill shot at us, it will be too late. We will get a couple days warning, and that’s it.

If you think anthropogenic climate change is a higher priority, you haven’t understood EITHER issue.

My guess is we will escape this sun-spot cycle without deviation, the Earth’s magnetic field will continue to weaken, and a decade from now when the sun spot cycle begins to peak again, we will be in big trouble. Maybe we’ll get lucky and we’re two cycles away from disaster and the big one comes closer to 2046.

That said, the next three days or so are dangerous. We have an active sunspot pointed right at us and it has delivered 2 huge flares with CMEs in quick succession. The fact that we aren’t prepared is an embarrassing failure of systems that swear they are very concerned about your safety.

Hint: They’re lying. We need adults at the helm who know who to consult on this issue.
