From a scouting perspective, Trevor Scott was one of the more intriguing small-school edge prospects in the 2008 NFL Draft because of his athleticism, explosiveness, versatility, and relentless motor. After beginning his career as a tight end before transitioning to defensive end at the @UBFootball, Scott developed into one of the MAC’s premier pass rushers. His combination of production, movement skills, and upside led to him being selected in the sixth round (169th overall) by the Oakland Raiders
What consistently stood out on film was Scott’s explosive first step and ability to threaten offensive tackles with speed off the edge. He displayed the flexibility to dip and flatten around the corner, active and violent hands to disengage from blockers, and the closing burst to finish plays in the backfield. He played with a relentless motor, consistently pursued the football from the backside, and used his length and athleticism to disrupt passing lanes. Against the run, he relied more on leverage, discipline, and pursuit than overwhelming power, but he consistently competed and played with outstanding effort
Several traits consistently showed up on film:
Explosive first-step quickness
Excellent edge speed and closing burst
Ability to bend and flatten around the corner
Active, violent hand usage
High-effort pursuit and relentless motor
Good lateral agility and change of direction
Positional versatility as a defensive end and stand-up outside linebacker
Good football instincts and awareness
Strong special teams value
Athletic enough to execute zone drops in hybrid defensive schemes
Those traits translated well to the NFL, where Scott was utilized as both a traditional defensive end and a hybrid outside linebacker in multiple defensive fronts. His athleticism allowed him to rush from either side of the formation, play from a two-point stance, drop into zone coverage when asked, and contribute on special teams. His versatility made him a valuable rotational defender throughout a seven-year NFL career with the Raiders, Patriots, Buccaneers, and Bears. He finished his career with 116 tackles, 16.5 sacks, and tied for the NFL rookie lead with 5.0 sacks in 2008
