Maybe it’s coincidence, but the timing is getting a little too tidy for me.

For two days my feed has been flooded with viral videos portraying new mothers as hysterical, destructive and completely unable to regulate themselves.

At the same time, we have the nationally televised Clancy trial putting postpartum psychosis front and centre, Massachusetts H.1924 moving the concept into the legal framework, and a broader push for postpartum screening, specialized psychiatric units and greater institutional intervention.

If you wanted the public to accept greater psychiatric oversight of new mothers, this is exactly the cultural atmosphere you’d want first: saturate people with extreme examples until increased monitoring feels protective rather than intrusive.

Then the important questions quietly become somebody else’s decision. Who defines “at risk”? What gets recorded? When does screening trigger mandatory assessment? When can assessment lead to confinement or child protection involvement?

Maybe my algorithm suddenly developed an obsession with hysterical mothers at a remarkably convenient moment.

Don’t give them the keys.
