The real-life inspiration for Tony Soprano, New Jersey mob boss Vincent “Vinny Ocean” Palermo, ran a strip club called Wiggles, spent time on his boat, hung out with his crew at a pork store, and was involved in brutal violence, including against his own family.

FBI recordings of the DeCavalcante family captured members reacting to the show: "Hey, what's this fing thing, Sopranos? What the f are they? Is that supposed to be us? Every show you watch, more and more, you pick up somebody... There's a pork store. Yeah, in Jersey, right? They got a topless joint over there. Jesus."

Those recordings were later used in court to convict four men of m*rder, racketeering, and extortion.

The man at the centre of it all was Vincent "Vinny Ocean" Palermo, born in Brooklyn in 1944, who earned his nickname working at the Fulton Fish Market before marrying into the DeCavalcante crime family in the 1960s, and eventually becoming its de facto boss.

The parallels with Tony Soprano are striking. Palermo owned a strip club called Wiggles, the real-world inspiration for the Bada Bing.

His crew hung out at pork stores. He ran the family from the shadows while a jailed boss nominally held the title, just as Tony operated beneath Junior.

His rise to the top was also triggered by a s*x scandal — when acting boss John "Johnny Boy" D'Amato's bis*xuality was revealed to the family, D'Amato was m*rdered and Palermo took control.

But unlike Tony Soprano, when the FBI closed in, Palermo flipped, becoming a government witness, confessing to multiple murders, and entering witness protection.

It's worth noting that David Chase has never said The Sopranos is directly based on Palermo, and drew from multiple real mob figures and his own family experiences.

Tony Soprano is ultimately a fictional creation, but the DeCavalcantes recognised themselves anyway, and that says everything.
