I first became aware of Dinesh D'Souza in 1991 when he published Illiberal Education. I thought it was a good book and explained helpfully what was happening on campus (some of which I had experienced as undergraduate in the early 80s).

He has publicly acknowledged his Roman Catholic background, which became an issue when he became president of King's College. He also has some experience with Calvary Chapel.

There's not a lot of evidence that D'Souza has carefully investigated the Reformation. At the time he was appointed to Kings he said that he was "comfortable" with Reformation theology but if that was true then it no longer seems to be true.

He has been attacking basic Reformation doctrine. The first Reformation sola is Sola Scriptura, which means that Scripture is the final authority for Christian faith and the Christian life. He seems to place reason above Scripture and seems dismissive of passages with which he disagrees.

He is leading a frontal assault on the material principle of the Reformation, Sola Gratia, which means that salvation is by unconditional divine favor alone. God does it. It's not a cooperative enterprise wherein God starts and we finish salvation. When the Israelites had their backs against the Red Sea and the Egyptians were bearing down on them they did not help save themselves. God saved them. That's sola gratia.

A third sola is sola fide, which means that helpless sinners are saved by through faith alone. The Reformation churches confess that faith rests in Christ, it trusts in Christ, it leans on Christ. It is Christ, not faith itself, that makes faith powerful.

A fourth, somewhat neglected sola is soli Deo gloria, which means that all the glory for salvation goes to God alone because it is he who has saved us and not we ourselves, not even in cooperation with grace.

D'Souza has been framing his blitzkrieg as a critique of "Calvinism," as though Calvin invented the doctrines to which he objects. As I've been saying, that would surprise Luther, St Augustine, and many other high (anti-Pelagian) Augustinians. All the magisterial Protestants taught unconditional election. The Lutherans confess it.

The Remonstrant movement, of which D'Souza seems now to be a partisan, was an attack on the Reformation and an attempt to overturn it.

D'Souza is framing this about "Calvinism" in order to capitalize on the bad press that Calvin has received over the centuries mainly from his enemies.

He obviously hasn't investigated these issues and is relying on stereotypes and caricatures.

It's not honest and, as I've been saying since I saw the beginning of his barrage, not the sort of thing I remember about his earlier work. Maybe I was naive about him in 1991?
