Fun @BlakeMurphyODC interview with @MVasgersian Friday on Fan 590, of course, turned to Matt’s Fox broadcast of the 2004 World Championships of Rock Paper Scissors. Overlooked was the fact that event was held in Toronto! Vasgersian / Tom Arnold an underrated broadcast pair.

I worked with Norman Jewison for several years on what would be his last film "The Statement" in 2003. He was inquisitive, grandiose, cranky, and passionate all in equal measure. Knowing him was like getting to talk with "old Hollywood" as personified by one man.

He loved giving out maple syrup from his farm, and had a delightfully impish sense of humour. I once saw him literally close down the dance floor at a wedding after everyone else had long gone home. He got mad at me for having the audacity to pick him up in a compact car.

Say what you will about digital projection, but the average screening experience is now *significantly* more reliable than it was. (I once QC'd a print - *straight out of the bath at a lab*, and was still dismayed by the volume of scratch and dust damage). (3/3)

Interesting reading tweets about the projector breakdown at Cineplex Colossus for the Oppenheimer opening yesterday. There's a whole generation clamouring to see this film on 70mm who is learning how unreliable print-based exhibition is. (1/3)

Projector breakdowns, print tears and scratches, no sound, janky focus... all used to be par for the course - by the 00s when trained projectionists were being phased out, there was at least a 1/5 chance I'd leave a film early because the technical standard was so poor. (2/3)

@TychoBrahe Oh absolutely. I was tangentially involved in a gov’t review process about legislating big tech in the 00s and it just left me sad and perplexed. Most politicians are profoundly not up to the task of fighting these incredible oligopolies they’ve left unchecked for so long.

@TychoBrahe A very difficult balance to get right though. Led to (temporary) bans on posting news on AUS sites, and Canadas proposed similar legislation (bill c-18) is also incurring the same risks (and some very suspect new govt. oversight of user generated content).

A decade ago, I worked with Gordon Pinsent on an adaptation of the A.R. Gurney play “Love Letters”. He was a consummate professional - and it was really special getting to watch someone with such depth of craft and experience up close. My condolences to his friends and family.

@uzionmain Don’t forget that Ontario abolished theatrical ratings during COVID because Ford wanted to “cut red tape” so closed the film review board with no plan to rate films - so kids can buy tickets to whatever the hell they want!

@mightygodking Haven’t had any issues like that, the “prices on weird items slowly increasing to ludicrous amounts” is a Amazon thing - a lot of sellers set prices algorithmically against their competitors and bugs can cause long term positive feedback loops if a human isn’t monitoring.

@wellgoshacs It’s the US betting odds. Dallas is apparently slightly favored to win so the spread is -3 Dallas, and the Over/Under for total points in the game is “o235” (so Over 235 points combined).

This is probably the least exciting answer for such a bizarre box score.

@diana_murphy613 We paid full costs for our kid, discount came in after she started school, and I am thrilled that other parents won’t have to make some of the career tradeoffs my wife and I did (mostly her).

@diana_murphy613 Because if you’re just entirely self interested you don’t want key members of your Labour pool exiting *just* prior to prime taxation producing years. But also, in a society, we all contribute towards useful societal tools even if we don’t need them individually?

@MikeMakesRight @mangiotto Yep. Specifics vary on a film by film basis but the split always shifts towards the theatres as the run goes on so they’ll always get *more* of a new release split the later you see it (and the first week can be *heavily* weighted to studio on major tentpoles).
