Still version, evaluate, deploy, monitor.

Still care about latency, cost, quality, failures, and what happens when real users touch the thing.

I see AI Engineering less as replacing ML Engineering and more as expanding it.

Same skeleton. New organs.

AI job titles are multiplying faster than the engineering underneath them.

ML Engineer. AI Engineer. LLM Engineer. RAG Engineer. Agentic AI Engineer.

Different tools, different emphasis.

But I’m not convinced they’re all different disciplines.

“Features” become documents, chunks, embeddings, retrieval.

“Training” might mean model selection, prompts, evals, fine-tuning.

“Inference” can include retrieval, context, model calls, tools, agent loops.

New components. Same kinds of system problems.
