After his failed coup attempt on 15 May 1979, Jerry John Rawlings (then a Flight Lieutenant in the Ghana Air Force) was arrested, tried by a military court, and sentenced to death. During his court-martial, he gave a speech criticizing corruption and injustice, which gained him sympathy among many junior military personnel and sections of the public.
He did not escape on his own. Instead, on 4 June 1979, a group of sympathetic soldiers—mainly junior officers and enlisted personnel from units based at Burma Camp in Accra—stormed the detention facility where Rawlings was being held and freed him. The rescuers then joined forces with him to launch a successful military uprising against the ruling government of General Frederick William Kwasi Akuffo.
All political prisoner can be freed if we unite as one people of Uganda.
To all Junior officers in the armed forces of Uganda, take note 📝.
