Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced Lieutenant General Susan Coyle AM CSC DSM will be appointed the new Chief of Army. Coyle is currently Chief of Joint Capabilities. She enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1987 and later graduated from Duntroon in 1992.

Her roles have included head of information warfare, Commander Forces Command, Commander Joint Task Force 633, Commander 6 Brigade, Commander Task Force Afghanistan, and Commanding Officer 17 Signal Regiment. Coyle will be the first woman in Australia’s history to command the Army, and the first woman to command a service.

Defence Minister Richard Marles said she has commanded at every rank she has held and was the standout candidate to succeed General Stuart. He said her recent work has come during a period of expanding and changing capability.

Coyle’s appointment is framed by the government as a historic milestone for the Australian Defence Force. Marles said it would be significant for women currently serving, and for women considering service.

PM defends $20m fuel-saving ad blitz.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government’s $20 million public information campaign urging Australians to use less fuel is aimed at curbing panic buying and reducing consumption amid what he called a “global challenge”.

Asked by a reporter whether the spend was the best use of taxpayers’ money, Albanese said officials were responding to sudden spikes in demand, including increases of up to 1,000 percent in some markets, following planning through the National Cabinet’s four-level strategic framework.

Albanese pointed to footage of motorists filling jerry cans, utes and vans and even water tanks with diesel, warning that storing fuel in garages is “unwise”, dangerous and contrary to the national interest. He compared the behaviour to hoarding toilet paper during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Victoria Police said in a statement that detectives from Taskforce Summit arrested two people on Saturday morning as part of an ongoing investigation into the movements of Desi Freeman following the fatal shooting of two police officers in Porepunkah last August.

Officials said a man and a woman were arrested about 7am on 4 April at two properties in north east Victoria. Police said both will be interviewed.

Police did not identify the two people, describe their relationship to Freeman, or specify any offences, citing the continuing investigation.

“The investigation remains ongoing and as such, we are not in a position to provide further details at this immediate time,” Victoria Police said.
