Is music is also a medium of evangelism? Absolutely. Music has several functions, even among Christians. It’s simply a medium or channel through which these items are expressed. Other mediums include stories (Jesus told parables), dancing (believe it or not), and more.

If we want to backtrack a little and state the primary purpose of music (which is relevant to the body of Christ), it is to carry or house any of these items:

1. A message: As Christians, we convey messages from the Scripture in songs, for instance, talking about watchfulness, diligence, the love of God between a godly couple, respect for our parents and elders, and of course, the message of Gospel.

2. Music can evoke certain Presences or spirits. In 1 Samuel 16:14-23, David, through music, soothed Saul when he was troubled by an evil spirit sent by God. (If it can repel spirits, it can as well call them.) In 2 Kings 3:15, Elisha called for a musician to play before him to bring the presence of the Lord upon him, enabling him to prophesy. There are also many types of music that can welcome the spirit of lust, silence, depression, etc. And it’s not only about the lyrics (a topic for another day).

3. An atmosphere/emotion: Music can stir up emotions such as celebration/thanksgiving, meditation, calmness, excitement/energy, love etc. For example, in Exodus 15:20-21, after the Israelites crossed the Red Sea safely, Miriam took a tambourine and led the women in singing and dancing to praise God.

We are instructed to preach, to teach, and to admonish, when it comes to the spectrum of language, there’s no singular medium to accomplish this task. The effectiveness of the channel and the ability God has given are key. Let’s not streamline these things.
