Ancient Rome had stone phalluses carved directly into the city pavement as street arrows pointing toward the nearest brothel. Not painted. Not posted on a sign. Carved into the road so you literally followed them with your feet.

The brothels were called "lupanaria," from "lupa," the Latin word for she-wolf, which was street slang for prostitute. The she-wolves howled to attract clients from the alleys. That is where the word comes from.

Inside, above each door, were explicit erotic frescoes depicting every available service. Not decoration. A visual menu, because clients came from across the empire speaking dozens of languages, and pointing worked better than talking.

The beds were carved from stone. Stone pillows. Still there in Pompeii today.

Over 120 pieces of graffiti cover the walls of the Lupanar in Pompeii, including what are essentially customer reviews. Archaeologists used them to reconstruct exact prices. A visit cost roughly the equivalent of two loaves of bread.

The whole industry was legal, registered, and taxed. Emperor Caligula formalized a tax equal to the price of one client per prostitute. The state was collecting revenue on it.

Prostitutes were also required by law to wear togas, the formal garment of male Roman citizens, specifically to mark them as outside respectable society. Roman wives wore the stola. Prostitutes wore what men wore. The humiliation was intentional and written into law.

And the word "fornication" itself comes from "fornix," the Latin word for arch, because prostitutes commonly worked beneath the stone arches of public buildings.

Every word in the modern moral vocabulary about sex has a Roman address. History class just never gave you the map.
