TOURISM HIGH SEASON

I flew into Entebbe airport on 31st May 2026 from Mombasa aboard @UG_Airlines good service but almost empty plane.

I flew out on 5th June 2026 to Rwanda, almost empty plane and flew back yesterday almost empty plane and Entebbe airport basically empty for a high season.

I sat a crane cafeteria at entebbe airport on the 5th of June with my son and was excited to see 3 other people join us, I recorded a video.

Uganda has one international airport, as we arrived I could feel the immigration officers were excited to see us, they filled the booths to see everyone served quickly and simply took minutes to go through.

Tanzania now with many international airports is booming, every airport is crazy busy, yes they border Congo too. Young people are busy because of tourism across Tanzania.

Today Rwanda is hosting UB 40 and I met Ugandans , Nigerians, Namibians, Kenyans etc who have flown in to watch UB 40, those are opportunities for the country and the population understands that.

I was shocked at MOVENPICK hotel how many waiters walked to me to thank me for posting about Rwanda online. 2 of them said, when Rwanda appears in good light, it sustains their jobs.

They held BAL just recently and spenders flew from everywhere to watch the most entertaining basketball games on the continent. It’s not just about the game but great imagine it continues to build for the country.

Kenya is booming, even the few conferences which were meant for Uganda are either going there or the other neighbors, Kenya is hosting 100s of conferences.

Mombasa alone was maxing out when I was there end of May 2026, I witnessed a 400 room hotel send away another 100 guests. A dream for Uganda hotel owners!

UGANDAS MAJOR ISSUE?

@MinofHealthUG @wekesa_amos @CHRISBARYOMUNS1 What is the likelihood that someone with high fever, vomiting, severe headache, fever etc would come for a marathon and run around, hug people etc. For church it's very likely, for social gatherings i might need an explanation.

@kutegyekaivan1 If you visit the Diocesan treasurer of your father's Diocese he will explain to you how you can get your fairness. So people have taken cases to court but lost because of lack of information but the little money your father contributed at the parish was taken to the Diocese

There is nothing special about Ugandan Tourism. Yes, I said it again...

I might make my friend @wekesa_amos choke on his katogo this morning, and perhaps I am mistaken. I come in peace. Yet, I am saying it again: if we want our tourism to succeed on the global stage, we need to focus on what is “truly special” about our offering and niche down.

Kenya and Tanzania have succeeded in positioning the uniqueness of their tourism offerings on the global scene. The Masai Mara, Hakuna Matata, the Serengeti, and the great migration are part of the vocabulary of most would-be travelers. Rwanda, on the other hand, is winning the gorilla war.

With our low budget for promotion (rightfully pointed by @Ronkawamara recently), we still pretend we can compete head-on in safaris, and we are missing the boat with our gorillas.

If we can’t win with money (unless there is a Manchester United sponsorship in the making?), the only way we can succeed is by picking niches where we have a tremendous advantage and doubling down.

A few ideas:

Running: We have two world-record holders, and Kapchorwa is the new home of champions. Running is also a multi-billion dollar industry.

“People wouldn’t run a marathon if they had to sign an NDA.”

You attend a party from the @rkabushenga running club and you feel like signing up for a marathon...

Runners are the best ambassadors because they are obsessed.

Extreme sports: We could become an extreme sports mecca. How about a Red Bull white-water kayaking event? I already see the footage going viral...

Birding: This is another multi-billion dollar industry. Birders are like runners; once the bug bites, they start spending thousands of dollars on equipment and trips (hint hint).

Culture, festivals, and nightlife: Why not take a leaf from Nyege Nyege and roll out a festival circuit in the country? “Uganda, the music capital of East Africa?” That would be special…

People will point out a few examples of steps already taken. Let's do more!

The Rwenzori Marathon is a fantastic initiative, for example. But what about pushing the envelope even more and sponsoring running clubs in the US and Europe? What about creating a TikTok account dedicated solely to trail running in Uganda and targeting running fanatics globally? What about doing a collab with @ShalaneFlanagan (a big running influencer and olympian)?

“Give a free all-inclusive trip to Uganda to run the Rwenzori Marathon to your most dedicated runner?”

My point is: Let’s find niches where we can truly dominate and let’s push the envelope to win them.

That’s how you become special.
