Washington threatening 100% tariffs on India for buying Russian oil (now enshrined in law) while the President says he will buy potash from Belarus, a Russian proxy totally dependent on Russia while the U.S. still buys some non-oil commodities from Russia ... the U.S. still doing hundreds of billions in trade with China while objecting to others doing so ... the President publicly saying he's weighing Chinese car manufacture in the United States while objecting to other countries doing so ... the U.S. asking for trade deals while walking away from the deals it already negotiated ...

Whatever the merits and demerits of these arguments about supply chains, Chinese chokepoints, and the obvious national security dimensions of third-party trade, the appearance of double standards and apparent hypocrisy will invariably weigh on perceptions of the U.S. as a negotiating partner ...
