Since launching on iOS back in August, Echoes has been turning physical cities into decentralized, audio-anchored spatial maps on @solana.

Today, we took the next major step: Echoes has officially been submitted to Google Play. 🤖📲

Today's update is about making those moments easier to feel. ✨

🔥 The echoes people love most now glow warmer on the map, from soft orange to deep amber, like a light someone left on for you.

🌆 On iPhone, echoes close to you look bigger and the ones far away fade into the distance. The map finally feels like the place it shows.

👻 Need a quiet walk? Ghost mode now keeps you off other people's maps, even after you close the app. When you're ready to be found, you'll be there again.

💬 A new echo and its post now share one conversation, so every like and every word lands in the same place.

🪪 Your name is yours: usernames are now unique.

📍 And "Nearby" finally means nearby, within 1 km.

Go for a walk. Leave something behind. Listen for what others left for you. 🎧

Comments on an echo can now be voice notes. You're standing where someone left a memory — typing back felt like the wrong gesture. So: hold the mic, say it, done. GIFs too, for when words aren't the point.

But the part I want to talk about is the one nobody will notice.

── The lock that wasn't locked ──

Listening to an echo has always required an account. That's been true in the app since day one: tap play without signing in, you get the sign-in screen.

Except the audio files themselves were public. Anyone with the URL could fetch them — no account, no app. The rule existed in the interface and nowhere else.

Worse: echoes set to "friends only" had exactly the same problem. The database protected the ROW — who can see that an echo exists, where it is, who made it. It did not protect the FILE. A private echo's audio was one URL away from anyone.

Nobody exploited this. That's not the point. A promise you can't enforce isn't a promise, it's a decoration.

As of 1.11.0 the audio bucket is private. Playback goes through short-lived signed URLs, issued only to a signed-in account, and only for echoes that account is allowed to hear. The rule is now enforced where it can't be bypassed — not in the interface, in the database.

The cost is honest: a signed URL expires after an hour, so offline replay of something you heard yesterday is gone. Worth it.

── Also in this release ──

✉️ Verify your contact email with a 6-digit code. Unverified addresses aren't shown to anyone but you — because an unverified public email field is an impersonation tool. Put someone else's address on your profile and their mail becomes your mail.

🏷️ Tag someone in an echo and they'll hear about the comments and likes on it too. It's their memory as much as yours.

⚡ Comments and likes now update live while you have an echo open, instead of appearing whenever you happened to reopen the panel.

🎧 And the click sound is finally instant. It was rebuilding an audio player from scratch on every single tap — 96 times per screen's worth of buttons.
