Stark facts regarding India
🌍 1. Air Pollution
India is home to many of the world's most polluted cities.
Air pollution contributes to an estimated over 2 million deaths annually in India through heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and respiratory illnesses.
🌳 2. Massive Tree Loss
Between 2001 and 2024, India lost over 2.3 million hectares of tree cover, equivalent to millions of football fields.
Infrastructure projects, mining, urbanization, and industrial expansion remain major drivers.
💧 3. Groundwater Crisis
India extracts approximately 25% of the world's groundwater, more than any other country.
Around 600 million people face high to extreme water stress.
🏞️ 4. River Pollution
More than 70% of India's surface water is estimated to be contaminated.
Hundreds of rivers and water bodies receive untreated sewage and industrial waste every day.
🗑️ 5. Waste Generation
India generates over 160,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily.
A significant portion remains untreated or ends up in open dumpsites.
🧴 6. Plastic Pollution
India produces more than 9 million tonnes of plastic waste annually.
Thousands of tonnes enter rivers, lakes, and oceans every year.
🔥 7. Extreme Heat
Heatwaves have become more frequent and severe.
Temperatures in parts of India have crossed 50°C, threatening human health, agriculture, and water supplies.
🌊 8. Climate Disasters
India experiences some of the world's highest climate-related disaster losses.
Millions of people are affected annually by floods, cyclones, droughts, and landslides.
🐅 9. Biodiversity Under Pressure
India hosts nearly 8% of global biodiversity on only 2.4% of Earth's land area.
More than 1,300 species are listed as threatened in varying degrees.
🏙️ 10. Shrinking Wetlands
India has lost a substantial share of its urban wetlands over recent decades.
Wetland destruction increases flood risk and reduces natural water purification.
A Stark Reality
📌 India has: 18% of the world's population
Only 4% of global freshwater resources.
