arnold lobel’s daughter found some of her father’s old, lost writings and published a book called /the frogs and toads all sang/. it’s all in verse and very cute but also, i found, pretty different from the frog and toad books we might have gotten used to #ECLobel

also i absolutely love the tiny line-by-line illustrations in “the journey,” especially the mother mouse with her knitting #ECLobel

the final chapter of shannon’s biography on lobel was especially impactful for me, the discussion of how his work quietly and effectively modeled the values of the time felt very true to today as well— maybe we all ought to keep sharing these stories outside of class :) #ECLobel

#BannedBooksWeek is coming up soon and my library has put up displays of banned or attempted-to-be-banned books, and seeing as we’re reading children’s lit which often has discussions of censorship around it, i thought i’d share! #ECLobel

also, i ask this in my discussion post, but how do we feel about potter’s older illustrations vs the newer ones? we read in nodelman’s texts about how color/style can affect the mood and perception of the images and stories— what stories are told in the b&w vs color? #ECLobel

this scene does not incite the same amount of visceral fear without the illustration of mrs mcgregor and her pie... the mention of it is easily moved past, but also then asks questions like why is it so easily moved past? a bunny has nonetheless been baked into a pie #ECLobel

also, we talked a lot about the presence of and conditions of images in children’s literature— one of those was “bright, colorful pictures” (nodelman 72). which brought to mind the pictures we saw in gorey texts and how they absolutely REKK that assumption #ECLobel

it was interesting seeing everyone’s responses this week in regards to what assumptions about childhood and children’s literature we hold
especially with the context of parson’s “ideology” text, we’re able to think critically about what shapes those assumptions and why #ECLobel
