Maldivian politics keeps repeating the same pattern.

In 2018, @MohamedNasheed was jailed, so the “second man” @ibusolih became candidate using the movement, sacrifice, and political energy built around Anni and the anti-Yameen wave. Once in power, Nasheed and many close allies were gradually pushed aside while #IbuCult strengthened its internal control over MDP.

Then history repeated itself.

@prz_ymn was jailed, @MMuizzu became candidate using Yameen’s political base, image, and support network. The moment he won, Yameen’s people were sidelined while Muizzu built his own circle, cabinet, and political cult.

Different parties. Same political formula.

Use the first man’s movement while he is jailed.

Take power through his support base.

Then remove his influence once power is secured.

The pawn reached the other side because the king protected it.

Then pretended it became powerful on its own.

Today’s political reality shows why movements must choose real leaders — not temporary “second men” who rise through another leader’s popularity, then build their own cults and abuse power without real vision.

Calling every popular leader a “cult leader” is lazy politics.

People support leaders for many reasons — vision, sacrifice, consistency, and trust built over years.

Disagree with the politics if you want, but don’t confuse public support with authoritarianism.
